COMMUNICATION MODES MED. SCIENCE. II -H

VERBAL SPEAKING WORDS WRITTEN COMMUNICATION

NON-VERBAL BODY LANGUAGE GESTURES FACIAL EXPRESSIONS TOUCH

PARTS OF COMMUNICATION SENDER - person who begins the process of creating a message or material to be communicated

Cont. MESSAGE - MATERIAL TO BE COMMUNICATED Receiver - Person for whom the message is intended; interprets the meaning of the message

Questions? The nurse asked the cna to take out the trash. according to the communications modes the cna is the _______ of the message. Mary talks with her hands a lot. She communicates best with what type of communication?

model cont. Feedback - the receiver’s way of insuring that the message that is understood is the same as the message that was sent takes place after the receiver has interpreted the message.

Factors of influence communication clear and concise, it must be in terms the sender and receiver can understand Speed of delivery as well as grammar and punctuation moderate tone avoiding monotone delivery Use of terminology that can be understood

cont..... interruptions or distractions can interfere with communication. ie. loud noises, poor lighting, and uncomfortable room or temp.

Barriers to communication communication barrier- anything that gets in the way of clear communication three common causes:physical disabilities, psychological (prejudice), and cultural diversity

physical disabilities deafness or hearing loss blindness or impaired vision aphasia or speech disabilities

psychological Barriers Prejudice attitudes personality

STEREOTYPES “DUMB BLOND” “FAT SLOB” “TRAILER TRASH” HEALTH CARE WORKERS MUST LEARN TO PUT PREJUDICE ASIDE AND SHOW RESPECT TO ALL INDIVIDUALS. DO YOU THINK THAT IS POSSIBLE?

Do all pts have the right to quality Health care? Regardless of income level regardless of ins types regardless of gender or orientation Regardless of citizenship

Cultural Barriers deal with values, beliefs, attitudes and customs *each cultural group has beliefs and practices regarding health and illness *Some believe the body needs balance *some believe illness is due to demons and evil spirits

? Do we have to respect these choices? What if they interfere with medical care? What if they want to try alternative methods?

LANGUAGE DIFFERENCES SPEAK SLOWLY USE A LOT OF NON-VERBAL COMMUNICATION (SMILE) FIND INTERPRETER EYE CONTACT- HOWEVER IN SOME CULTURES THAT IS NOT ACCEPTABLE, LOOKING DOWN IS A SIGN OF RESPECT

Language difference Avoid speaking louder Try to know before giving bad news if the family likes to know first or the patient

The longer I live, the more I realize the impact of attitude on life. Attitude, to me is more important than facts. It is more important than the past, than education, than money, than circumstances, than failures, than successes, than what other people think or say or do. It is more important than appearance, giftedness or skill. It will make or break a company... a church... a home. The remarkable thing is we have a choice everyday regarding the attitude we will embrace for that day. We cannot change our past... we cannot change the fact that people will act in a certain way. We cannot change the inevitable. The only thing we can do is play on the one string we have, and that is our attitude. I am convinced that life is 10% what happens to me and 90% how I react to it. And so it is with you... we are in charge of our attitudes
