Concepto: las expresiones del tiempo las expresiones del tiempo

What you will find in this presentation: 1. Introduction to Weather Expressions A. How to express “it” B. Differing Verb Expressions 2. Nouns vs. Verbs 3. Practice Exercises

It’s important to know the phrase “it’s _____”. In English, we use this all the time when we express the weather. But…what exactly is “it”? Are we talking about the sky? The location of where we are at? What is “it”? In Spanish, it is the same thing. However, there is no specific translation for the word “it”.

In order to express “it”, in Spanish, you simply do not put a subject in front of a verb at all. Example: Es bonito. (It’s pretty.) Example: Es una lástima. (It’s a shame.) Example: Me aburre. (It bores me.) Notice that in all of the above examples, there are no subject pronouns in front of the verb. This is the simple way to express “it” in Spanish.

Weather expressions vary in English and in Spanish. This means that we use different verb forms to express the weather. For example, one can say in English: “It’s cloudy.” “It’s cloudy.” “It’s storming.” “It’s storming.” “It’s hot.” “It’s hot.” However, you would never say “It’s clouding.” or “It’s hotting.”

Weather expressions vary. This means that there are different verb forms to use when expressing the weather. It depends on the expression, just like in English, we would say “It’s sunny” instead of “It’s sunning.” The four ways to express weather are: Hace Example: Hace calor. (It’s hot.) Hace Example: Hace calor. (It’s hot.) Hay Example: Hay niebla. (It’s foggy.) Hay Example: Hay niebla. (It’s foggy.) Está Example: Está nublado. (It’s cloudy.) Está Example: Está nublado. (It’s cloudy.) A verb that stands alone. Example: Llueve. (It’s raining.) A verb that stands alone. Example: Llueve. (It’s raining.)

Review: Nouns: are names of people, places or things that when in the common form can take an article “the” or “a/an”. Nouns: are names of people, places or things that when in the common form can take an article “the” or “a/an”. Verbs: are words that express a state of being, action and that can take tense (i.e. past, present or future). Verbs: are words that express a state of being, action and that can take tense (i.e. past, present or future). These concepts apply to nouns and verbs in Spanish. You will notice that the verb phrases that you are learning in Spanish refer to weather that is occurring or happening. Many of these words though can be used as nouns. How do you tell? Simple…by the article.

Llueve. vs. la lluvia Llueve. Is actually a sentence in Spanish, which is why it is capitalized and ends with a period. Llueve. Is actually a sentence in Spanish, which is why it is capitalized and ends with a period. La lluvia is obviously a noun, because it takes the article “la”. La lluvia is obviously a noun, because it takes the article “la”. Llueve. is a verb phrase already, it cannot DO something. La lluvia is a noun, it can DO something, because it can be a subject. Example: La lluvia es deprimida. (The rain is depressing.)

Nieva. vs. la nieve Let’s try this example with “snow”. 1. La nieve es blanca. (The snow is white.) 2. Nieva mucho en Colorado. (It snows a lot in Colorado.) 1. La nieve is an object that takes an article and can “do” something. The verb that it is doing is “being” white. 2. Nieva is a verb phrase that is the actual action pertaining to what it does a lot in Colorado.
