G063 - Video Conferencing

Learning Objectives: By the end of this topic you should be able to: describe the features of video conferencing compare the use of video conferencing for a given task with other methods of communication Synoptic objectives: discuss the effect of possible future developments in ICT on communication

What is Video Conferencing? “ the use of communications links and video technology to conduct meetings between people who are geographically separated ”

What is required? 1.video conferencing suite –dedicated room –video cameras, microphones, speakers –individual screens showing each of the participants 2.computer-based system –camera (webcam) - mounted on the PC monitor –microphone (to pick up speech,) –software Skype, Google video chat …. 3.high bandwidth data link, –large amount of data transmitted video & audio

What can it do? system transmits video pictures and voice –simulating face-to-face contact computer data files can be exchanged –documents, spreadsheets, images, videos ….. whiteboard feature –brainstorming, collaboration ….

Advantages of Video Conferencing since video conferencing uses sound and vision: –allows for more natural communication –body language can be seen –better relationship with other participants –can see lecture/demonstration/product and interact can involve many people –not just those physically present –more participants than can fit in a room –share ideas and involve a wider team meetings can be held at short notice –no time lost through travel –participants fresher than if they had to travel to meeting

Advantages of Video Conferencing cost effective –no travelling costs or hotel bills accessibility –disabled can participate more readily –can include/encourage teleworkers recordings of meetings –to be used as minutes –can be referred to later to clarify a point of dispute

Limitations of Video Conferencing cost of equipment –webcam, microphone, speakers, dedicated suite …. bandwidth must be sufficient –or will get ‘jerky’ video, unsynchronised video & audio quality is not always good –low resolution webcams (in mobile equipment) cannot forward physical objects to handle –‘some objects need to be touched?’ limit to number of people on screen at any one time communication still not as good as face to face time zones can be very different for participants need for training?
