Inside a Desktop Computer video

Peripherals A computer peripheral is any external device that provides input or output for the computer. –For example, a keyboard and mouse are input peripherals, while a monitor and printer are output peripherals. –Some peripherals, such as external hard drives, provide both input and output for the computer.

Printers A printer is used to print documents, photos, or anything else that appears on your screen. There are many types of printers available –Inkjet –Laser –all-in-one (printer, scanner, and copier) –Usually uses a USB Port to connect to the PC

Scanners A scanner allows you to copy an image or document and save it to your computer as a digital image –Many scanners are included as part of an all-in-one printer/scanner/copier –you can also buy a separate flatbed or hand-held scanner

Speakers & Headphones Speakers and headphones are output devices, which means that they are devices that communicate information from the computer to the user. –They allow you to hear sound and music –Some monitors also have built-in speakers – Depending on the model, they may connect to the audio port or the USB port. Light green usually for headphones Pale red usually for microphone

Microphones A microphone is a type of input device, or a device that receives information from a user. –Many computers come with built-in microphones. –You can connect the microphone to the computer and use the computer to record sound or to communicate with another computer user over the internet – e.g. Skype. –Connects via Microphone or USB port

Webcams A web camera, or webcam, is a type of input device that can record videos or take pictures. –It can also transmit video over the internet in real time, allowing you to do video chat or video conferencing with somebody in a different part of the world. –Webcams are used often in business, and they also help many friends and families stay connected. –Laptops, tablets and smartphones usually have built-in webcams

Plug-and-play “Plug and Play”, is a catchy phrase used to describe devices that work with a computer system as soon as they are connected. –The user does not have to manually install drivers for the device or even tell the computer that a new device has been added. –The computer automatically recognizes the device, loads new drivers for the hardware if needed, and begins to work with the newly connected device.

USB Ports USB is the most common type of computer port used in today's computers. –It can be used to connect keyboards, mice, game controllers, printers, scanners, digital cameras, and removable media drives, just to name a few. USB is also faster than older ports, such as serial and parallel ports.

VGA Port VGA (Video Graphics Array) is a very common monitor port –Both the cable and the port are almost always blue –There are screws on the cable which anchor it to the port

Other Ports PS/2 Ports connect older mice and keyboards to the PC Ethernet ports allow the PC to access the internet or a LAN (local area network)
