THE ENDOCRINE SYSTEM BY: SERENE AND MADDIE

The Endocrine system The endocrine system is made up of several different glands which are just organs that produce hormones. Hormones are the chemicals that regulate your body.

Hormones Chemical messengers in the blood which helps them go to organs and tissue to regulate their functions.

Main glands 1. Pineal gland 2. Hypothalamus 3. Pituitary gland 4. Pancreas 5. Thyroid gland 6. Thymus 7. Adrenal glands 8. Ovaries 9. Testes

Diagram of the endocrine system

The pineal gland The pineal gland is at the center of the brain, it produces a hormone called Melatonin which helps you sleep.

The Hypothalamus The hypothalamus Is the central part of the brain, which controls which hormones are produced, and released into your body.

Pituitary gland The pituitary is in charge of the growth hormone, which controls your growth, it’s called Somatotropin, and it regulates your metabolism and body composition.

Pancreas Makes hormones that break down food called insulin

Thyroid Gland Produces hormones that regulate calcium levels & metabolism.

Thymus Contains glandular tissue and produces various different types of hormones.

Adrenal Glands Produces hormones called Estrogen, progestin, and Cortisol, that regulate blood sugar, and proteins.

Interesting facts Some interesting facts about the Endocrine system are: That the word hormone is only about a 100 years old. Also it is not only the only hormone system. And dogs were once used in the research of the endocrine system.
