Accelerated Reader

Why? In order for year 11 pupils to access their GCSE exams effectively to achieve pupils need to have an average reading age of at least 15 years. 25% of year 11 pupils in the UK have a reading age less than 11 years old. One in six adults in the UK cannot find a plumber in the Yellow Pages due to their poor literacy skills. 66% of employers are not satisfied with the basic use of English by school and college leavers.

Reading Facts: Reading is one of our most popular pastimes. 66% of us read in our free time, making reading more popular than......gardening (48%)...going to the cinema (48%)...theatre and concerts (42%)...DIY (38.5%)

Facts… Overwhelming evidence that literacy has a significant relationship to people's life chances. Vital that children enjoy reading - motivation is essential for acquiring literacy skills. Reading for pleasure is more important than either wealth or social class as an indicator of success at school.

YET… Only 40% of England's ten year olds have a positive attitude to reading. The figure for Italy is 64% and 58% for Germany. We face huge challenges in encouraging the rising generation to engage positively with reading. Society pays a big price if we get this wrong.

Based on the principle, practice makes perfect, AR is a computerised learning system designed to help teachers motivate, monitor and manage student reading practice. What Is Accelerated Reader?

Y7, Y8 & Y10 nurture group The students read three mornings per week Also one English lesson per week is dedicated to reading

Star Tests These tests provide summative assessment Performed as a Baseline and at the end of a session 20 minutes on PC Gives the students a book level

And Then.... At the end of each book the students complete a comprehension test 10 minute PC test during registration. If they get 85% twice or more they move up a level! Fill in their blue reading log Then choose another exciting book

Logistics AR books must stay in school Stay in box in form room Take to English lesson DFL then returns to form room Students have a folder with – Book – Blue reading log – Book mark

What’s in it for them? Prizes! – Who can reach 1,000,000 words? Who can get 100% in their end of book test? Certificates

Practice at an Appropriate Level The reading range is your child’s INDEPENDENT reading level, the range in which they reads best when they are alone, without needing assistance from an adult. Books within your child’s reading range will contain new vocabulary that will challenge them without being frustrating.

Home Connect Parents may view their child’s progress in Accelerated Reader, view books for which quizzes have already been taken, and help their child select new books to read at any time simply by accessing Home Connect from any computer with Internet access.
