1 How to Use Accelerated Reader at Oakcliff Traditional Theme School By Crystal Cooper

2 Objectives  Teachers will be better able to answer questions related to the use of Accelerated Reader  Teachers will be able to effectively us the STAR Reading Assessment program  Teachers will be able to correctly choose an AR Book  Teachers will be able to assist students in completing AR Quizzes  Teachers will be able to explain to parents how the AR system works

3 What Is Accelerated Reader?  Many Schools participate in the AR program  The program is an individual reading comprehension practice program.  Teachers are able to use the program to determine individual growth for each student.  Students are able to determine what books they can read effectively, by knowing their reading level.

4 Placement Tests and Assessment Homeroom Teachers and media specialists are charged with assessing the students at least twice per year to determine their individual reading level. The Star Assessments are completed on a computer and take approximately 15 to 20 minutes to complete. The Assessments are meant to help determine initial reading levels and thereafter monitor progress Students have a unique user i.d. And password so their data is secure.

5 Going to the Media Center  Students are able to go to the media center with confidence in their ability to read their chosen book.  All AR Books are color coordinated to indicate the reading level of the students.  When students reach new AR goals they are able to choose new book levels.  Students can reach new levels by excelling in the AR quizzes for each book.

6 AR Practice Quizzes  Test are designed for each book.  Some questions have audio capability, depending on the reading level.  Points are earned for every quiz in which a score of 80% or above is earned.  Quizzes are usually 5 questions for lower grades and 10 questions for higher grades.  Number of words read is automatically kept and recorded.

7 Accessing AR From Your Classroom  Each Student computer is downloaded with a network based Renaissance Learning program.  Students click this icon and login with their Student i.d. as their username and four digit birthdate as their password.  Students are locked out of their account if they input five incorrect passwords.

8 Let’s Get Started Students will log in to AR from the Renaissance Place icon on their computer screen. Students must type in the name of the book they would like to test on.

11 Students are able to keep track of their own progress by accessing reports Student Reports

12 Becoming a Millionaire At Oakcliff, any student who reads a million words or more becomes an Oakcliff millionaire. This privilege entitles the student to special perks that are only for millionaires. We begin our million word campaign by having a parade to kick off our reading goals.

14 Conclusion  Accelerated Reader can be beneficial to both students and teachers  The Accelerated Reader program can be a great tool for motivating students to read.  The Media Specialist has a primary role in promoting the Accelerated Reader program in schools  At Oakcliff we love Accelerated Reader
