1 Welcome to the Accelerated Reading Parents’ Meeting
Reading for pleasure Reading improves writing Increased vocabulary Improved knowledge/experiences Parents reading to children - any age Improves well-being Success in the future At Broadwater we have a programme which forms a part of the approach to teaching reading. All children are expected to read and the aim is to improve the above. Children read in school but are expected to read at home. If children continue to read into their teen then we know that this will increase their social mobility. See quote Reading for pleasure at the age of 15 is a strong factor in determining future social mobility. Indeed, it has been revealed as the most important indicator of the future success of the child. ‘That was the startling finding of research carried out by the Organisation for Economic Co-operation and Development on education and reading, and their role in promoting social mobility.’

Accelerated Reader is a powerful tool for monitoring and managing independent reading practice, motivating your students to read for pleasure. At Broadwater we have a programme which forms a part of the approach to teaching reading.

3 Reading Enjoyment, Behaviour and Attitudes in Pupils who use Accelerated Reader (2016) Pupils who use Accelerated Reader (AR) enjoy reading, read frequently and think more positively about reading than their peers who do not use AR. This is based on findings using cross-sectional and longitudinal data sets. There is also some indication that pupils who do AR for four years have better outcomes in terms of reading enjoyment, reading frequency and reading attitudes than children who do AR for less than four years. We also find that reading enjoyment is the only variable in a complex interplay of variables that has a strong bi-directional influence, regardless of gender and whether children use AR or not. This not only highlights the importance of reading enjoyment, but also underlines the need to develop effective methods to encourage children and young people to read for enjoyment.

4 Star Early Literacy identifies children’s command of key literacy skills.
Renaissance Star Early Literacy is a computer-adaptive assessment, using sophisticated item calibration and psychometrics to adjust dynamically to each child’s unique responses. The tests can be taken at any time throughout the year and as often as results are required to measure progress.

5 Diagnose difficulties and plan instruction
Diagnose difficulties and plan instruction. Identify what skills children are proficient in, or excelling at, and where intervention may be needed. Assess early literacy and numeracy. Accurately and reliably assess 41 skill sets in ten key literacy and numeracy domains. Generate reliable data on every child. Screening and progress-monitoring data that make it easy for you to set priorities for instruction and intervention. See reports for each child- example of this. Information used to support the child and the provision made/ feedback to parents if necessary.

6 AR in the classroom with the whole class AR in small groups
What happens next? AR in the classroom with the whole class AR in small groups AR individually See reports for each child- example of this. Information used to support the child and the provision made/ feedback to parents if necessary. Anna to explain this have a quick go at a quiz. When your child start quizzing individually then a letter will come home to support this.
