What is a soft skill? A These soft skills include: Communication Enthusiasm and Attitude Teamwork Networking Problem Solving and Critical Thinking Professionalism This was based on information drawn from the Packet

What is Communication? Communication, most fundamentally, is the expression of your thoughts any ideas with someone else. Communication can be conducted in several different ways Verbal Aural Non-Verbal Written Visual

Why is Communication Important? Communication is important because it is how we understand each other. One of the challenges in the workplace is learning the specific communication styles of others and how and when to share your ideas or concerns. Though some supervisors may specifically ask for your opinion. Employers consistently rank good communication skills at the top of the list for potential employees

3 Examples of Communication in the Workplace… Tom needs his printer fixed. Emma knows how to fix it. Tom asks her politely to help. The printer gets fixed. Emma is really short and she needs the stapler from the top shelf in the supply closet and she asks Tom to reach it. Tom is busy setting up a phone. A customer politely engages him and asks for assistance explaining that they need dog food. Tom promptly directs them to aisle 18

Enthusiasm and Attitude Why They are Important: Enthusiasm and Attitude can mean the difference between having a job and not having one. It’s a big part of your success in the workplace Employers would rather take a less qualified employee who is enthusiastic verses a qualified on with little enthusiasm Examples: Laura is interviewing for a job at Caltech. Her employer asks her a series of basic questions. Laura decides to proactively and enthusiastically take the interview down a different path, explaining how she is inspired by the work she plan on doing and how she plans on doing it.

What is teamwork? Teamwork is working hard together. Having a sense of responsibility. Working Cooperatively What are three examples? Working cooperatively Communication Ability to participate in group- decision making Contributing to group ideas, suggestions, and effort Why Is teamwork important in the workplace? If people work as a team things would get done quicker and more efficient.

Networking A way to get things out Career development and exploration A group of people with whom you interact with. Why is networking Good for the workplace? When networking for the purpose of career development, this means talking to friends, family member, and acquaintances about you goals, your interest, and your dreams What are three examples of networking in the workplace? Talks with your boss. Connecting with co-workers. Having and interview with a company.

Problem Solving and Critical Thinking If someone needs to let off some steam, employ good problem solving skills Refers to the ability to use knowledge, facts, and data to effectively solve problems. Critical thinking in the jobs is section focus on learning how to solve problems in a variety ways in the workplace
