Objectives Students will… understand the orientation of planets in the solar system. -The sun is a star that appears larger and brighter than other stars because it is closer. MONDAYTUESDAYWEDNESDAYTHURSDAYFRIDAY -Dedicated to “Knowledge” (first tier on Bloom’s Taxonomy) -Introduction to solar system on white board (planet’s names, appearance) -K.W.(L.) method -Book: “The Planets in Our Solar System” separately -Coloring worksheets to complete separately -Video -Group assignments based on mixed ability by the teacher - Computer lab to research planets on the website provided by their teacher. -Worksheet with three questions per planet which they will complete as they do research - Writing exercise with facts from each planet. Copy + paste accordingly under the respective planet on the bulletin board in the classroom -Science project introduce -Handout displaying planet’s distance from the sun, minimum and maximum temperature will be provided -Each group of students will be given nine index cards for fact recording -Distance from the sun math activity on the whiteboard -Field trip to the Connecticut Science Center -Students will visit an exhibit dedicated to our solar system -Students will visit at least three stations where they will complete a worksheet and participate in interactive games -Upon return, they will discuss as a class what they learned and how they can use that information when creating their projects - Completion of their capstone projects -Individual favorite fact presentation in front of the class -Jeopardy activity -Award winning team -Wrap up with “L” component of the “K.W.L” method

Wednesday Task 1: ●Students will get into their small groups ● The science project will be introduced ● Students will be reminded to keep all of their worksheets Task 2: ●A handout displaying the planet’s distance from the sun, minimum and maximum temperature will be provided ● Each group will be given nine index cards asking for the plants a) Distance from the sun, b) Minimum temperature and c) Maximum temperature. ● Once students have filled in the three facts they will be instructed to put them in their desks Task 3: ●Teacher provide line graph on white board ●Students will place assigned planet on the board accordingly

Friday ●Students will be asked to get back into their groups ●Each group will be given ten styrofoam balls, nine straws cut at different lengths, ten toothpicks, and ten pieces of tape ●Students will work together to create a diorama of planets revolving around the main styrofoam ball which will represent the Sun. ●Each student from the group will write down a fact about their planet

Friday ●Jeopardy will act as the evaluation component of Bloom’s Taxonomy ●Students will be individually called on to answer various questions worth different points regarding the solar system
