About Daedalus Daedalus was a highly respected Athenian, as well as a descendent of the royal family Cecrops. He was known for his skill as an architect, sculptor, and inventor, and he produced many famous works. Unfortunately, he was also the jealous type. When his nephew Talos invented the saw, Daedalus feared he might be more talented than him. Unable to take it anymore, he pushed Talos off of the Athenian acropolis. He was found guilty and exiled to the island of Crete.

About Talos He was also called Perdix. He was the nephew of Daedalus. He was a brilliant inventor, among his inventions was the saw. He was thrown off of the Athenian acropolis by Daedalus. Athena saved him while he was falling by turning him into a partridge.

About Icarus Icarus was the son of Daedalus and Naucrate. He was thrown in the labyrinth thanks to his father helping Theseus kill the minotaur. He ignored his father’s warning and flew too close to the sun while escaping with him. The sea that Icarus landed in is called the Icarian Sea, between the Cyclades and Asia Minor.

The Plot Daedalus was sentenced to the island of Crete for throwing Talos off the acropolis and placed in the service of King Minos, where he eventually had a son, Icarus, with the beautiful Naucrate, a mistress-slave of the King. The king called on Daedalus to build the famous Labyrinth in order to imprison the dreaded Minotaur (The son of Pasiphae, the wife of Minos, and a bull that Poseidon had sent to Minos as a gift.)

The Plot (part 2) Daedalus revealed the mystery of the Labyrinth to Ariadne who in turn advised Theseus, thus enabling him to slay the Minotaur and escape from the Labyrinth. When Minos found out what Daedalus had done he was so enraged that he imprisoned Daedalus & Icarus in the Labyrinth themselves.

The Plot (part 3) Daedalus escaped from the labyrinth with Icarus by wearing wings made of feathers and wax, but before they flew he warned Icarus not to fly too low lest his wings touch the waves and get wet, and not too high lest the sun melt the wax. Icarus, excited by the thrill of flying, did not listen to his father's warning, and flew too close to the sun causing the wax in his wings to melt. Not long after, Icarus fell into the sea.

The Plot (part 4) Daedalus escaped to Sicily. The body of Icarus was carried ashore by the current to an island, then without a name. Heracles came across the body and recognized it, so he gave it a burial. Today, there still stands a small rock promontory jutting out into the Aegean Sea, and named after the island after the fallen Icarus.

Morals One of the morals of this myth is to not act on your jealousy of others, as Daedalus did towards his nephew. Another moral is to listen to the advice of parents, which Icarus did not do, and so he paid the ultimate price – death.
