2  1. Who were Prometheus (forethought) and Epimetheus (afterthought)?  They were brothers. Prometheus was immortal, and Epimetheus was mortal.  2. What did Prometheus do to make Zeus so angry?  Prometheus stole fire from Mount Olympus and gave it to humans.

3  Zeus had Prometheus chained to a rock, and vultures came and tore him open every day.

4  She took with her a mysterious sealed jar.

6  Evil is released on the world as a result of Pandora’s curiosity.  6. What remains to help comfort mankind when misfortune strikes?  Hope is what remained to help comfort mankind.

7  1. Why was Venus angry with Psyche?  Men began to abandon Venus to see Psyche.  2. What command did she give Cupid concerning Psyche?  Venus told Cupid to give Psyche water that would make her fall in love with an ugly, awful man.

8  Cupid wounds himself with one of his own arrows and gives her a remedy to the water his mother told him to give her.  4. What does the oracle tell her parents to do?  They had to send Psyche to the top of a mountain, where a monster of immortal birth would become her husband.

9  Psyche is never to try to see his face.  6. What caused Psyche to go against her husband’s instruction?  Psyche’s jealous sisters convince her that she must see what he looked like and kill him if he was a monster.

What were Psyche’s three penances?  First, Psyche had to sort out a warehouse full of all types of seeds in a day.  Then she had to gather golden wool from very fierce sheep.  Finally she had to bring a box of beauty ointment up from Proserpina in the underworld.

13  Zeus carried Europa to Crete via the shores of Europe.  3. How many sons did the couple have?  They had three sons.

14  1. Who was Daedalus?  Daedalus was a master inventor, craftsman, engineer, thinker, architect, and builder.  2. What king needed Daedalus to build the labyrinth (complicated maze)?  King Minos needed the labyrinth built.  3. What was the name and description of the monster that was kept in the labyrinth?  The monster was called the Minotaur. It was half man and half bull.

16  Daedalus warned Icarus not to fly too close to the sun and not to fly too close to the sea.

17  The lesson of this story is to listen to the advice of those who have more experience than you.
