6 Characters Characters: Prometheus- a young Titan who is stubborn in his ways, goes to see Zeus on Mount Olympus and suffers great consequences Zeus- the great lord of the sky who hates explicit questions

7 Literary Element Theme: – A theme is the message, or general truth about life, expressed in a work of literature. A piece of writing may have a stated theme, which is expressed directly, or implied theme, which is revealed gradually through the thoughts and actions of characters. 1.What is the theme of “Prometheus”? Support your answer with ideas and examples and quotations from the myth.

11 Characters Characters: Daedalus- a master architect who makes wings for himself and his son to escape from prison. Icarus- Daedalus’ son who falls while flying too close to the sun. King Minos- An evil king who imprisons Daedalus and his son Icarus.

12 Literary Element: Myth People in every culture throughout the world have created ancient stories of unknown origins, often involving gods and heroes. Myths originally helped people try to explain how natural events and human actions happened. Collections of myths, known as mythologies, generally account for everything in the experience of a particular culture. Greeks and Romans have a rich tradition of mythology.

13 Compare Myths “Icarus and Daedalus” and “Prometheus” are Greek myths that portray characters attempting to use intelligence to outwit their fates. The theme of knowledge and freedom play an important role in both of these myths. – Answer questions on page 747

14 Answers Deadelus makes wings with which he can fly. He escaped from the island with Icarus, but in the end he loses his son. Prometheus steals fire and gives it to human beings. He reaches his goal but is punished terribly. Because ignorant Icarus and defiant Prometheus ignore advice, they suffer terrible consqequences.

15 Story # 1 Plot Summary Prometheus asks Zeus why he did not give humans the gift of fire. Zeus explains that humans would misuse fire and have many troubles, including disease, war, old age, and worry. Prometheus disobeys Zeus and introduces fire to humans. When Zeus find out, he has Prometheus captured and chained to a rock, with two vultures to guard and torture Prometheus forever. Centuries later, Prometheus is finally rescued by Hercules.

16 Story # 2 Plot Summary King Minos has imprisoned the master architect Daedalus and his son, Icarus, on an island. Daedalus builds wings they can use to escape. He warns the boy not to fly too high or too low, but in the joy of flying, Icarus forgets the warning. When he flies too close to the sun, his wings melt, and in terror he falls to his death. Filled with grief, Daedalus vows never to attempt to fly again.
