Governor Support Service Training Governor Workshop 31 st March 2016 As a service we have a responsibility to enable all governors to access appropriate, timely and relevant training and support. Developed and knowledgeable governors will support the school in delivering and ensuring the best outcomes for all children. A knowledgeable, experienced team providing quality services to develop the effectiveness of governance in all schools and academies

Workshop Purpose To help you identify a clear set of actions to deliver the governing body action plan To seek out evidence of impact, improvement and development Develop a plan that works within the school budget for governor development Work with the Chair to progress appropriate and timely development Provide sign posting to training and development opportunities available to governors Supporting the school and children by being the most effective and knowledgeable governing body you can be Understand the booking and finance process

The Role of the Training Governor “It is governing bodies’ responsibility to identify and secure the induction and other ongoing training and development governors need. Governing bodies should set aside a budget for this purpose” “Governing bodies should review their effectiveness regularly, including the extent to which their size and structure is fit for purpose and their members have the necessary skills” “…. All current and prospective governors should commit to continuing professional development to develop their skills as governors” The statutory guidance on the constitution regulations issues March 2015

The Role of the Training Governor Co-ordinate and monitor training needs Enable governors to execute their specific responsibilities Support regular self evaluation Identify knowledge gaps Discuss appropriate and timely ways to move development forward with the Chair Maintain evidence of training, development and impact

Governor Skills Audit Identify both strengths and development areas for the governors as individuals and for the governing body as a whole. As a tool it is excellent to track improvement and progression in closing knowledge and skills gaps Should be completed annually and feed into the governing body development plan Self review tool kits are available from Governor Support Service. Facilitated reviews can be requested

Training Governor Action Plan Helps to prioritise your actions Gives clear accountability for who will complete the actions Useful to track progress throughout the year Good format to feedback to the governing body under the Governor Development agenda item to be included in the minutes

Governor Specific Roles A set of governor specific role profiles are available Excellent starting point to set clear expectations of what is expected The training governor should give guidance to the governing body on appropriate training to enable governors to carry out their role effectively and with impact Termly breakdown of suggested activities is included

It is essential that the governors address is used at the point of booking and not the school’s address.

On the right hand side select the “Download Brochure” which will produce a pdf document for you to review, or print (it is lengthy!) When you click on a course, the next page will display all the information regarding the content, date, time and venue Courses need to be booked by the business manager of the school

Evaluation and Feedback When attending governor training, we will provide an evaluation form for you to record your feedback for the governing body Next steps are vital The impact of the training received should be recorded and shared with governors Share your feedback on development and training with Governor Support Service!
