Together, We Care More Meet MMCAP Infuse.
Presentation transcript:

 The purpose of the survey was to gather feedback from MMCAP Medical Supplies and Equipment contract users related to:  Experiences and satisfaction with MMCAP’s distributors  Barriers to using MMCAP’s contracts  Use of ancillary services offered through MMCAP distributors  Importance of various top-spend offerings  Factors and trends affecting patient care in the future  And to better understand the MMCAP Medical Supplies and Equipment customer.

 Surveys were sent to MMCAP medical supplies and equipment contacts  Response rate= 20% (58 respondents out of 290 surveys sent)  The survey was conducted in November, 2013 and open for two weeks  Online survey

 A key finding of the survey was that the current list of MMCAP Medical Supplies and Equipment contacts needs to be refined. ◦ We sent surveys out to MMCAP’s contact list after cleaning the addresses and attempting to track down missing contact information for over 50 facilities. The final distribution list included 371 contacts. ◦ Once the survey was distributed via , 74 of the s (20%) bounced back. Of these we were able to find updated contact information for 16 by calling the facilities we had listed. ◦ Several contacts were removed from the list because they responded that they no longer used MMCAP. ◦ In the end, 290 surveys were sent to viable addresses.

 All but two respondents indicated they were involved in purchasing.  Respondents were categorized as “low” or “high” users depending on their annual MMCAP medical supplies sales  Low-users= annual sales between $12,000 and $49,999  High-users= annual sales of $50,000 or more.  53% of respondents were high-users, 47% low-users.  Differences in responses between the high- and low-users are highlighted when they are statistically significant at the 5% level.

 Annual Medical Supplies and Equipment Sales through MMCAP: ◦ Respondents total= $6.1 million  Low-users= $0.7 million  High-users= $5.4 million

N=58 75 percent of respondents were the primary purchasing contact person or very involved in medical supplies and equipment purchasing.

N=56 A large majority or respondents classified their MMCAP membership as “State Government.” Respondents could choose multiples types.

Long-term care and mental health were the most common facility types. A higher proportion of higher-users (57%) than low-users (19%) identified their facility as “long-term care.” A higher proportion of low-users (31%) than high-users (7%) identified their facility as “public health.” Respondents could choose multiple types.

N=56 Half of the respondents categorized their care type as “long-term care.” Over a third categorized their care type as “health services.” Higher-users reported their care type as “long-term skilled nursing” at a higher proportion than low-users (52% versus 12%). Respondents could choose multiple types.

N=56 The largest percentage of respondents reported their role as administrative. A quarter of respondents identified their role as the state purchasing contact.

 The majority of respondents (57%) use MMCAP as their exclusive GPO for medical supplies and equipment.

N=25 A large majority (82%) of respondents indicated pricing was their most or second most important factor in selecting MMCAP. Only 9 percent ranked customer service among their top factors.

 42% of low-users indicated legal or regulatory barriers were reasons they do not use MMCAP exclusively.  Other reasons included: ◦ Lack of awareness about MMCAP’s contracts (12%) ◦ Lack of awareness about MMCAP’s distributors (12%) ◦ Affiliation with other GPO (6%) ◦ Personal preference (6%) ◦ Lack of need for medical supplies and equipment (6%)

 Low-users provided the following open- ended responses: ◦ MMCAP is not marketed well ◦ Prices on the website are only for core items which we do not buy ◦ Helpful to offer training webinar ◦ Requiring facilities to be health care ◦ Newsletter is helpful

“Syringes and testing supplies” were the highest ranked in importance. Nearly all the options were important to a majority of respondents.

 70% of respondents reported it is “very important” or “important” to their facility to have fixed-term pricing on Core Product items.

N=56 The largest percentage of respondents (75%) indicated they use McKesson. 70 percent of respondents reported using more than one distributor.

 Online Ordering (63%) was the most often used service.  Online Reporting Capability (36%) was the second most often used service. N=56

Overall, most respondents indicated using McKesson’s online ordering (54%). Among those using McKesson, 73 percent reported using the service.

N=56 A third of all respondents reported using McKesson’s online reporting capability. Among respondents who reported using McKesson, 44 percent reported using this service.

% of respondents within each distributor McKesson and Medline had the highest private label product use among their users (79% and 75%, respectively).

For nearly all distributors, less than half of respondents who reported using private label products reported they were a better value than brand name products. Note the low number of respondents within several distributor groups.

N=29

 “We need to know what you have available so that we can maximize our purchases with you. We are a strong supporter of MMCAP and its programs. We would like to be able to purchase 100% of our products through MMCAP.”  “Please send each MMCAP member an with their MMCAP online access information. I have experienced problems in the past and to be honest I couldn't even tell you what my online username/password are.”  “Maybe more involvement when a major change is being made by the vendor. For example, McKesson was changing a private label that we bought, which can be a huge issue, and MMCAP had no idea about the changes coming up.”

 No changes expected (5 comments)  Aging population (3 comments)  More obese population (1 comment)  More veterans in care (1 comment)  More mobile population (1 comment)  Unknown (3 comments )

 Most of the 18 respondents to this question indicated they did not know what changes they will make. A few respondents said they will make no changes and one respondent indicated electronic records would be required.

Other key findings from 2010 survey: The majority of respondents said they: Prefer to have multiple MMCAP contract distributors rather than one contract distributor to meet their state’s medical equipment and supply needs (10 out of 18 people). Think MMCAP should offer products through a combination of contracted distributors and direct contracts with manufacturers for specific high usage products (12 out of 16 people). Prefer that MMCAP contracts with multiple manufacturers for high usage products (e.g., syringes, gloves) (9 out of 18 people).
