How the government dealt with slavery This PowerPoint tells you how the government dealt with slavery By Luke Stuart Date: 3/13/11

this pic shows a group of U.S. marshals hunting down and capture any runaway slave/s

Facts #1 Washington, D.C. Not only did the nation's capital allow slavery, it was home to the largest slave market in North America.

Facts #2 According to the compromise of 1850 or the fugitive slave act, Texas would relinquish the land in dispute but, in compensation, be given 10 million dollars money it would use to pay off its debt to Mexico. now about Washington, the slave trade would be abolished in the District of Columbia, although slavery would still be permitted. Finally California would become a free state

Fact #3 For slaves attempting to build lives in the North, the new law was disaster. Many left their homes and fled to Canada. During the next ten years, an estimated 20,000 blacks moved to the neighboring country.

Fact #4 In 1824, the Missouri State Supreme Court ruled that free blacks could not be re-enslaved, a law known as "once free, always free." In 1846, the Dred Scott v. Sandford case began. Dred and Harriet Scott, who were slaves, sued for freedom in state courts. This was on the premise that they had previously lived in a free state. This case continued until 1857, culminating in a landmark United States Supreme Court decision rejecting Scott's arguments and sustaining slavery. In 1860, 3600 free blacks lived in Missouri.

Fact #5 Also in 1818, Missouri requested admittance to the Union as a slave state. This became a national controversy due to the delicate balance between free and slave states. In 1820, the Missouri Compromise cleared the way for Missouri's entry to the union as a slave state, along with Maine, a free state, to preserve the balance
