Faculty Promotion and Tenure Workshop Monday, April 18, 2016 Melissa Crawford Office of Faculty Development and Advancement Binder Review

What will we discuss?  What is changing?  Contents of the “binder”  Future of the P&T process

What is changing? Nothing…except ◦ The Office of Faculty Development and Advancement will not be accepting hard- copy binders effective with the process. ◦ Colleges will submit 4.PDF files for each candidate.

What does this mean for you? Make sure you know which staff member in your department/school or college will be helping you. Yes, you can still prepare a hard-copy binder. Staff members in your area can scan everything for you. It will be up to the colleges to determine if scanned binders will be required at the department/school level.

Relax…you don’t need to know the details.

Contents of the “Binder”

Who is responsible for preparing the binder? The Department Chair/School Director (or Dean in colleges without departments) is responsible for preparing the file (binder). The Candidate must also participate in this process. The Chair/Director or Dean and the Candidate must sign the summary cover sheets. ◦ The Candidate’s signature certifies that he/she has reviewed the file (binder) and that the contents are valid and accurate. ◦ The chair’s/director’s or dean’s signature certifies that the file (binder) complies with University procedures and has been reviewed by the candidate.

Creating a Successful Binder Use the Information in Attachment I of the Promotion and Tenure Memo Use The Promotion and Tenure Main Binder Checklist Make sure you know which staff member in your area can help you. Staff members in your areas are very knowledgeable and can answer most questions. Please contact me if you need more clarification.

Organization of the “Binder” Section 1: Cover Sheets (Tab1) Includes votes for promotion and tenure Early tenure agreements Agreements to adjust tenure status Candidates will sign here to signal that you have reviewed the contents of the binder. Section 2: General Information (Tabs 2-15) Chair’s/Director’s and/or Dean’s Letters Response to these letters (if applicable) Department/School and College Summaries Tenured Faculty Summary Outside Letters CV from FEAS (finalized and unaltered) In Press Acceptances (no conditional acceptances)

Section 3: Evidence of Achievement (Tabs 16-22) Your major accomplishments Your discussion of teaching, research and service SPCI reports Sample Syllabi Scholarly or Creative Works (think about how you want to submit these) Section 4: Evaluative Materials (Tabs 23-24) 2 nd and/or 4 th year reviews Progress towards promotion and/or tenure letters Organization of the “Binder”

Section 5: Late Additions (optional) Proof of article accepted for publication Documentation of a new grant approval Documentation that a creative activity has been accepted for viewing Staff members in your area will help you. Organization of the “Binder”

Common Mistakes Must be a finalized and unaltered CV from FEAS CV missing one-sentence description of each published work since employment at FSU, or since last promotion at FSU CV missing co-authors In-press acceptances not actually saying the work was accepted (no conditional acceptances) Three years only for: ◦ Courses taught (except in rare circumstances; no extended report) ◦ Student responses to SPCI #13 ◦ SPCI summary forms The annual evaluation form should not be included All assistant and associate professors should have annual progress towards promotion and/or tenure letters

Future of the P&T Process Dr. Jennifer Buchanan Associate Vice President for Faculty Development and Advancement

Next Year ( ) The Promotion and Tenure process will be entirely digital through a customized workflow available in myFSU-HR. o From eBinder creation all the way to the President level. o It will be required. o Confidentiality and security will be enhanced. o Candidates will be able to track progress of their eBinders. o Training will be provided.
