© Oxford University Press 2010 Sample Response Letter: Write a letter to your local newspaper expressing your views on what could be done in the community to protect the environment. Task – text type / format Audience Purpose W words – who, what, where, when, why how?

© Oxford University Press 2010 Sample Response Letter: Student response Dear Sir or Madam, I should like to express my views on the pressing issue that is the protection of the environment. It seems as though we are reminded every minute of our lives to recycle, use public transport instead of cars and only have reusable shopping bags in supermarkets, so I am not writing to preach. I believe that each of us are capable enough and have enough time to do our bit for the environment. Write a letter to your local newspaper expressing your views on what could be done in the community to protect the environment.

© Oxford University Press 2010 Sample Response The introduction of the recycling bins scheme for all households was a great step forward and an increasing amount of us have taken to walking or riding a bike as opposed to taking the car for every little errand. However, we can do more. I think that clothes shops could sell more apparel made out of recycled material – both stylish and eco-friendly. This way, we’re both reusing and reducing waste. The amount of packaging on many products could be dramatically reduced, particularly plastic packaging that most of us readily confine to the dustbin. If packaging was either recycled or recyclable, it would be so much easier to be environmentally friendly.

© Oxford University Press 2010 Sample Response Formal letter writing Your address in the top right hand corner and underneath put the date. Dear Sir/Madam unless you know the person’s name. If you are writing to an organisation, remember to put their name and address details on the left above the body of the letter. Commas should be at the end of each line of address, either use them or don’t. Be consistent! If you start with Dear Sir/ Madam, you end with ‘Yours faithfully’ If you start with Dear Mr Smith end with ‘Yours sincerely’ Adopt an appropriate viewpoint as asked by the question, if it does not specify make up your own viewpoint (it doesn’t have to be genuine just convincing.) Avoid “I am writing to …” and abbreviations e.g. I’m. Sum up the purpose of the letter
