Introduction

Background Research [1] – 56.5% rate quality teaching good or excellent Personal Experience – Breakdown of program-frequently cancelled – No input from junior doctors – Emphasis on statuary and mandatory training – No simulation or practical teaching

What we wanted to achieve Weekly 90 minute protected, bleep free teaching sessions Consistently high standard –MDT delivered teaching Interesting and varied curriculum

Teaching Curriculum Hospital medicine Community medicine Specialist interest sessions Career sessions Regular Simulation sessions

Structured Feedback Weekly feedback Collated and sent to teachers Shown that most sessions were highly valued – but some weren’t! Strongly Disagree (SD), Disagree (D), Neutral (N), Agree (A), Strongly Agree (SA) SDSD DNASASA CONTENT Number of trainees The content was at an appropriate level The content was relevant to my training STRUCTURE The aims and objectives were clearly stated The material was well organised and presented PRESENTATION The presenter appeared enthusiastic about the subject Audience participation and interaction was encouraged There was adequate opportunity for questions The tutor held the attention of the audience OVERALL This was a valuable learning experience Overall, this teaching session was of a high quality Comments on what the trainees particularly liked about the session: Comments on what the trainees felt the session might be improved by:

Simulation Small groups 8 Run by Resus/sim team, ITU Consultant and anaesthetic juniors. Year 1Year 2 BLS / ALS Defibrillator Recognition of deteriorating patient “..as Team leader” Pediatrics ED “focus” “Tricky stuff!”

FPD perspective Organisation is everything Involving trainees is an excellent move F2s CAN teach F1s Mandatory training can be enjoyed Practical and “small group” training is onerous to organise but is greatly appreciated Give them what they want!

Conclusions Widening curriculum and using novel sessions is important to diversify and improve content Ongoing feedback and improvement is essential Organisation and involvement of foundation year doctors improves the content and running of the program
