RULES and REGULATIONS

Registration Appointment of academic advisor by the department Registration for courses OBS password: Grad Scool -Use ‘student registration form’ for scientific prep. courses - For regular courses: registration is online: use OBS Course Requirements: M.Sc. with thesis: 7 courses, 21 credits, 1 seminar (you can take max 2 undergrad. level courses) You have to repeat courses with a grade lower than CC. M.Sc. without thesis: 10 courses, 30 credits (you can take max 3 undergrad. level courses) Ph.D.: with an M.Sc. degree: 7 courses, 21 credits (seminar) without an M.Sc. Degree: 14 courses, 42 credits, 1 seminar You cannot register for Ph.D. Thesis (xxx700) until you finish all your coursework and you pass your Qualifier Exam. You have to repeat courses with a grade lower than CB.

Thesis Proposal Submission (form M1) You can register to M.Sc. Thesis (xxx600) after completing 4 courses BUT you have to submit your proposal (form M1) to Grad School before you register for M.Sc. Thesis (xxx600). Registration Appointment of academic advisor Registration for courses You have to register for M.Sc. Thesis – xxx600 for at least 2 semesters!!! Your grade for M.Sc. Thesis – xxx600 will be X, meaning that you are continuing your thesis. It will be P (pass) after your defense. Maximum 2 courses can be taken with M.Sc. Thesis. If courses are not completed, you cannot register for only M.Sc. Thesis.

(After completing coursework register for xxx691) Appointment of thesis advisor Registration Appointment of academic advisor Registration for courses (form D1) Appointment of qualifier exam jury (form D2) (Form submission deadline: Check Grad School calendar) o Do not register for Ph.D. Thesis- xxx700 before passing your qualifier exam. o If your qualifier committee requires you to take classes, they should be taken NC. o If you fail, in the following semester you need to register to xxx691 and take the exam again. o Your grade for Ph.D. Thesis- – xxx700 will be X, meaning that you are continuing your thesis. It will be P (pass) after your defense. The qualifier exam (form D3) o Qualifier exams should be completed within the dates announced on Grad School calendar. o Students with ‘special student’ status cannot take the qualifier exam. o Qualifier exam is composed of a written exam, followed by an oral exam. o Students with an M.Sc. Degree are required to take this exam by the 5 th semester. o Students without an M.Sc. Degree are required to take this exam by the 7 th semester. (2 jury members should be from another university)

Before the meeting, student needs to submit a written proposal to the committee. Proposal Meeting should be done within the first 6 month after the qualifier exam. (form D5)

Before the meeting, student needs to submit a progress report to the committee (TIK). Student needs to explain the progress in front of the committee (TIK). Graduate School of Natural and Applied Sciences M.Sc Programs (with or without thesis) Maximum 3 years Doctorate Programs - with M.Sc. Degree: Maximum 6 years ( coursework should be completed in 2 years) - without M.Sc. Degree: Maximum 9 years ( coursework should be completed in 3 years) Completion times for the programs: If cannot defend timely You need to give a petition approved by the department for extra time (each time at least for six months). The petition needs to be approved by the Grad School Committee.

Graduate School of Natural and Applied Sciences Important Reminders: Please check academic calender of the Graduate School for deadlines. Please make sure that we have your current contact information ( , telephone and address). Please register every semester regarding of your stage in the program (qualifying, proposing, thesis etc.) Those who are in the status of ‘special student’ must bring the missing documents by the end of the first semester.
