5 Recruitment Goal AY2011-2012 The MSE program is ramping up AY2010-2011 welcomes 8 graduate students to the program (all PhD) For AY2011-2012, we are projecting to increase the graduate student population by 10-12 new PhD students Materials Science & Engineering Program

7 Graduate Program Requirements 36 units of approved coursework (trivial, 3 quarters at 12 units) Ph.D.: At least one class in all five areas of MS&E is recommended -Foundations of MS&E -Materials Structure -Materials Characterization or Simulation -Functional Materials -Materials Synthesis or Processing Materials Science & Engineering Program

8 Ph.D. Program Preliminary Exam Five written tests (1 hrs), one in each area. I will ask the instructor of your class in each area for the exam The exam will be collocated with the EE exam. Materials Science & Engineering Program

9 Ph.D. Program Advancement to Candidacy Exam Qualifying Committee (4 members from MS&E, 1 outside member) Please suggest committee members and clear their availability Thesis Proposal (2-4 pages) Oral Presentation Plan on 25-30 min Introduction and Relevance Preliminary Results Plan of Research You will be asked plenty of questions during and after the presentation. The exam will take 2h. Show that you take ownership of your project Materials Science & Engineering Program

Application for Candidacy for M.S. in MSE Deadlines posted in the Schedule of Classes and are posted every quarter. Final Defense Preparation Schedule the date of your final defense with your committee members and reserve a room. Submit the title and abstract for your thesis announcement to GA Abstract and Title must be submitted no later than 9 days prior to your defense. Defense ResultReport the results of your thesis defense Report on Final Defense for Master’s Degree Submit to GA as soon as possible after your defense. Thesis DraftRough Draft on Final Thesis n/aOne week before the final draft is due. 15 Course Enrollment Every Quarter Enrolled in a minimum of 12 units MSE 250(Colloquium) – 1 unit Research (MSE 297 or MSE 299) – 1-12 units MSE 200 – you can repeat it, if you intend to give part of the introduction. You will receive a grade then. Materials Science & Engineering Program

16 Course Enrollment Normal Registration Process Advising Form Confirm courses with your Faculty Advisor Obtain Faculty Advisor signature Turn in form to Nicole Morginsky Enroll into courses online through GROWL Nicole Morginsky enrolls you into MSE 297/299 Nicole Morginsky helps with enrollment, if GROWL does not accept your choice.
