Still Life Name Project Ms. O’Ryan Media Arts 1 st semester 2012

What?

Why are we doing this? 1. To gain basic drawing skills. 2. Understand still life drawing, color theory, composition, and pattern (what?) 3. Invent and discover to create 4. Analyze art traditions. 5. Add your own personal touch to a current art trend.

What is the difference in subject matter?

What is the difference?

Still Life’s Still Life: subject matter that exists of “still” objects meaning they do not move. Originally Still Life's were started as a way to show religious themes due to most peasants not being able to read the Bible. (Bibles were written in Latin). Eventually this evolved into symbols that represented death and the life hereafter. Some still life’s were also meant to contain sexual jokes. Note the Fruit on the Ledge…Those crazy artists… Harmen Steenwijck, Vanitas (1640) Fruit on a Stone Ledge-Caravaggio

Take a look at what is on your table Let’s trying drawing… Let’s trying drawing… Think about value: range of lights to darks (shading) Think about value: range of lights to darks (shading) Composition: arrangement of the images Composition: arrangement of the images
