Get thinking Plurals ending in the s sound have two different ways of being written. Monkeys Families

So how do we know? It’s easy! If you know your vowels ( a e i o u) then working this out will be easy. If the word that needs to be pluralised has a vowel before the last letter, you just add s. If it is a consonant before the last letter, you drop the last letter and add ‘ies’
