B101 Coursework Assignment Pushkar Patel

An Introduction Hi, my name is Pushkar Patel and i’m currently studying Computer Network Management and Design at the University. As part of my B101 (The Technology Context) assignment I have to deliver a presentation about the product I chose to write about and highlight the qualities of the product design, it’s effect on the environment, how it can be beneficial and the sales + brand image of the business. The product is Apple’s 27” iMac released in 2010.

The Product Design and Sustainability The iMac is one of Apple’s flagship retail items and sells millions of units every year. Amazing capabilities, out of the box. I’m a user of one and think it’s pretty damn awesome. However, is it sustainable? Is the product I and millions others bought good for the environment?

Apple When Apple manufactures products, their focus is on the environment and how it affects us long-term. With the iMac, they are produced using materials that contribute less to the environment. The display is made of Arsenic-free glass which is safer and contributes a lot less to the environment. The aluminium frame is also recyclable and reused.

Apple continued... They have a policy where they are happy to take your old computer away and safely recycle it. Free of charge. The power usage of the product is low for the specification it offers. While offering a powerful CPU - it is highly competitive to lower spec competitors such as Dell. All-in-one so looks good, but saves power on multiple outlets such as Monitor, and separate central base unit.

The Design The iMac has several different design concepts that not only make it a good product, but a revolution. While costly, the design is usually what attracts customers to Apple products. Apple has a philosophy of making not just powerful products, but beautiful too. Effort is made down to the last wire.

Design Concepts The design features an all-in-one seamless enclosure. Instead of messy wires, there’s just one. Simple yet elegant. Could be applied to a TV with a built-in Sky Box facility. This could make it easy to use, saves space and out the box.

Ease of Use Ease of use is a concept that Apple has concentrated on, the iPod would not have taken off if it wasn’t easy to use - just like the desktops and laptops! Software is enjoyable and trouble-free. Mac OS X is easy to learn, powerful and clutter-free.

Brand Image Apple brand image is it’s most powerful ally. Their product strategy has been to create new innovative products with a sleek, sexy and natural feel. A strategy that’s about lifestyle, imagination, innovation, passion, hopes, dreams and aspirations. Image is backed up by claims, offers excellent after-support with it’s “Genius Bars” - New product, Same old Motto.

Sales Revenue This strengthened the finances of the Cupertino based company, Apple reported that half their computer sales to to first time consumers. The product is a Cash cow, steady and sensible. Sold 3.2 Million Units in the last quarter, a growth of 33% compared to 2009 statistics.

Attitude of Customers Apple designs and enforced brand image has always left customers talking. Apple has a responsibility to provide a sustainable product and have delivered. Passed on to customers who aren’t satisfied with cheap quality, the product design reflects a premium product. In turn, customer expects a premium service, which Apple provides over the phone and/or in retail stores.

Followers Apple doesn’t really advertise. Yes there are TV adverts but not a lot else. The hype is created by customers and fans alike. No Facebook or Twitter pages, but a massive support without asking for it. Not many other companies can blag that.

Thank you Thanks for watching my presentation, I hope it was interesting and informative! PUSHKAR PATEL (497438) - UNIVERSITY OF PORTSMOUTH YEAR ONE.
