BTEC Unit 6 Outcome measures

Objectives To evaluate some outcome measurement forms To identify ways of measuring outcomes effectively To design an outcome measurement tool you could use in your work

Outcome measures What are they? What do outcome measures need to achieve? Why do we need them?

Outcome measurement tools A measure of change Should measure if the change is due to the intervention

How can you use the results? To provide data to demonstrate the value of your service To evaluate your intervention i.e. to improve your practice To enable the client to reflect on their own progress

In your pairs: discuss these examples of questionnaires what do you think works well, what do you think could be improved? would you use any of these questions?

What changes are you measuring? Specifics - e.g. do you know if the doorbell has rung? Additional benefits e.g. use of hearing aid Qualitative – measuring improvements in well-being e.g. feeling more independent feeling less isolated

A good measurement tool Clear, easy to understand, accessible Specific questions – unambiguous Convenient and acceptable to the client Questionnaires not too long Easy for the client to measure ‘before’ compared to ‘after’ Gives answers that are easy to record Gives you meaningful information Measures the impact of your intervention

Self-assessment questionnaires A pitfall? how people describe themselves - implications for budgets?

Outcome measures task Draw up an effective outcome measurement tool that you could use in your work - Which outcomes should you choose - and why? - Consider how the questions you ask affect the ability to measure the outcome of your intervention Always think about what it is you want to extract from it and how you could make best use of the information
