What are steroids?  Drugs used by athletes to enhance performance  Increase chance of winning  Help develop/increase muscle mass

Learning Outcomes  Aspire- Discuss the use of steroids to enhance performance in athletic events.  Challenge-Identify the reasons for taking steroids and explain how this can enhance performance.

 Identify the reasons why athletes take steroids.

Steroids- reasons for  Increase muscle mass- e.g shot putter can throw further as they can generate more power.  Train harder/longer- greater fitness adaptations.  Increase aggression- mentally psyching performers up more especially in throwing events e.g shot  Recovery time is decreased if injured- can return to training quicker so less likely to lose adaptations.  More suited to power events as increase muscle mass leads to more power.  Others take and don’t get caught  Increases chances of winning- fame/rewards.

6 mark structure??  Introduction- What are steroids.  Reasons for- Why do athletes use them?  Reasons against- Why should they not use them?  Conclusion- Your opinion!!!

Why should an athlete not use steroids?

 Side effects;  Can lead to increased aggression- lose focus or behave inappropriately- cause a drop in performance.  Lower sperm count- reduced fertility- less chance of having children.  Promote acne- impact on self esteem.  Cause liver damage- risk of liver disease  Can get banned/disqualified- drug testing.  Against the rules/morals of the sport.  Unfair competition/ not a level playing field.  Reflects badly on sport- media coverage- lower participation rates.  Cheating.  Lose sponsorship/ named and shamed.

Conclusion?

Conclusion  Advantages lead to development of power  Therefore more advantageous for sprinters/throwing events than long distance/endurance runners.  Many ethical considerations.  Health risks.  Should not be taken to enhance performance.
