12  Drugs that control heart rate  Lower heart rate, steady shaking hands and have a calming effect Beta Blockers… BUT… They can cause low blood pressure, cramp and heart failure

13  Mimic testosterone  Increases bone and muscle growth  Makes you more aggressive Anabolic steroids… BUT… Cause high blood pressure, heart disease, infertility and cancer Women may grow facial/body hair and their voice may deepen

14  Increase the amount you urinate, causing weight loss  Can mask traces of other drugs in the body Diuretics… BUT… Can cause cramp and dehydration

15  Affect the central nervous system  Increase mental and physical alertness Stimulants… BUT… Lead to high blood pressure, heart/liver problems and strokes They are addictive

16  Kill pain – so that injuries and fatigue don’t affect performance so much Narcotic analgesics… BUT… They are addictive, with unpleasant withdrawal symptoms Can make an athlete train too hard Lead to constipation and low blood presure

17  Cause the production of other hormones – most have a similar effect to anabolic steriods  EPO (erythropoietin) is a peptide hormone that causes red blood cells to multiply which increases aerobic capacity Peptide hormones… BUT… They can cause strokes and abnormal growth
