The One Thing

Key Difference Between Checkers and Chess “The key difference between checkers and chess is that in checkers the pieces all move in the same way, whereas in chess all the pieces move differently. Thus, if you want to excel at the game of chess you have to learn how each piece moves then incorporate these unique moves into your overall plan of attack.” —Buckingham 2005

12, The Elements of Great Managing

Gallup Q12 Survey  Do I know what is expected of me at work?  Do I have the materials and equipment I need to do my work right?  Do I have the opportunity to do what I do best every day?  In the last 7 days, have I received recognition or praise for doing good work?  Does my supervisor, or someone at work, seem to care about me as a person?  Is there someone at work who encourages my development?  At work, do my opinions seem to count?  Does the mission/purpose of my company make me feel my job is important?  Are my coworkers committed to doing quality work?  Do I have a best friend at work?  In the last 6 months, has someone at work talked to me  This last year, have I had opportunities at work to learn and grow?

First, Break All the Rules Base Camp: What do I get? Camp 1: What do I give? Camp 2: Do I belong here? Camp 3: How can we all grow? The Summit: Positive responses to all 12 questions

A Strengths Dialogue  Tell me a time when you were at your best?  What do you enjoy most about your role at work?  What ways do you “play to your strengths” at work?

Four Question Protocol  Would you share your professional/work philosophy with me? (What brings you to work each day?)  What are you Strengths and how might I see those strengths in your work?  Is their anything you would like me to observe or watch for as we work together in the department and college? (Something that you are especially proud of? Something that you are working on? An issue that you are trying to manage or solve? Something on which you would like for me to partner?)  How would you like to engage in conversations and feedback about your performance? Specifically, how would you like to engage in “summative” performance conversations? (Karre, 2007)
