According to Rizzo, “Millennials (also know as Generation Y, Echo Boomers, Net Gen, Nexters, Generation Why) born : Even as this generation enters the workforce, their personalities are already emerging. For starters, these young workers recognize that not only will they change employers throughout their career, they will change the type of work they do” (2009). I agree with Rizzo on these points.

“Overall, HR professionals are generally positive about relationships among the generations, with half saying they work effectively together and 27% saying the quality of work frequently improves with a variety of generational perspectives. However, 28% of HR professionals said conflict among generations had increased over the last five years and 33% expect it to increase over the next five” (Rizzo, 2009). “42% of HR professionals said their organization has lost Gen- Xers and Nexter employees who believed they could not advance in their careers because veterans and baby-boomers held top positions. HR professionals reported implementing succession- planning programs, offering training or increasing compensation in order to retain younger workers” (Rizzo, 2009).

If I were a member of the Green Globe Team, how would I structure the team’s communications to ensure that project deadlines were met and that the communication methods utilize the strengths and preferences of each team member?

1.Provide structure 2.Provide leadership and guidance 3.Encourage the millennial's self-assuredness, "can-do" attitude, and positive personal self-image 4.Take advantage of the millennial's comfort level with teams. Encourage them to join 5.Listen to the millennial employee 6.Millennial employees are up for a challenge and change 7.Millennial employees are multi-taskers on a scale you’ve never seen before 8.Take advantage of your millennial employee’s computer, cell phone, and electronic literacy 9.Capitalize on the millennial’s affinity for networking 10.Provide a life-work balanced workplace 11.Provide a fun, employee-centered workplace (Heathfield, n.d.)

How do the technological, societal, and business influences listed affect the perspectives, values and work paradigms of the generation you represent?

“Generation Y is a generation that values balance and moderation. They want time to be with friends. They are conformists and team players, more than any other generation, and they will be very loyal if the organization provides them with a few things: flexible schedules, the opportunity to take long periods of time (without pay to travel or do community service, and project or group-focuses work that has measurable outcomes. They respect leaders and want someone to look up to” (Rizzo, 2009).

More likely to believe that it is possible to have a perfect world They are diplomatic Like to work out problems peacefully Parents intervene on their behalf Not expected to take care of themselves Concerned with the government Makes sacrifices for society and community Look for balance between material good and spiritual happiness “Go do it” generation Look up to leaders and expect guidance and protection from them They see a boss as a mentor and coach Expect to be paid for what they do, not how much time they spend doing it (Rizzo, 2009)
