Title: Pericles Source: The History of the Peloponnesian War

Greece: The Golden Age Leader – Pericles: 1. Elected leader of Athens for 32 years. 2. Moved Athens towards a more democratic government by: a. codified laws b. created jury duty c. removed restrictions on office holding (poor could participate)

Greece: The Golden Age 3. Created the Delian League – alliance of city-states to continue defense against Persia. [did not include Sparta] 4. Made Athens the strongest naval power in the Mediterranean.

Greece: The Golden Age 5. Beautified Athens – Parthenon [took 15 years to build]

Achievements 1. Classical Art – established the principles of order, balance and proportion; focused on the gods and heroes.

Achievements 2. Drama and Theater – 1 st people to write and perform plays; Performed by all male actors in outdoor theaters. a. Tragedy writers – Sophocles [Oedipus Rex] & Euripides [The Trojan Women] b. Comedy writer – Aristophanes [satire]
