Why Recycle? Review of lesson 1  Recycling is one of the easiest things you can do to help the environment  Some benefits of recycling include: Saving resources that are used to make new products Saving energy that would otherwise be used to extract, refine, transport and process raw materials into products. Reducing greenhouse gas emissions Reducing the amount of rubbish sent to landfill All councils recycle many common items, but some types of materials they accept in the recycling bin will vary. Generally, paper, steel, glass, aluminium and hard plastic can often be recycled. Most councils will not permit nappies, electronics, cutlery and crokery and clothing to be placed in household recycle bins

The problem with plastic bags Watch this television ad about plastic bags. to-get-it-right/watch-television-ads Can you guess why recycling should not be put inside plastic bags in your recycling bin? Recycled items need to be sorted by machines – this sorting is impossible if the materials are not able to be separated.

Recycle from every room When recycling, think beyond your kitchen! Watch this television ad about where to find recycling materials. get-it-right/watch-television-ads

How to improve recycling at home To recycle right on bin night:  Check for recycling in every room  Make sure items are empty Items don’t need to be sparkling clean, just empty. Remove solid food scraps like pizza and leftovers.  Make recycling easy Placing separate rubbish and recycling bins in each room Why not try a small box or container under the bench or in a cupboard to collect recycling.  Remember to put your recycling in the bin loose rather than in plastic bags.

Is your bin always full? If you have a lot of waste and recycling to put out:  Think of ways that you can reduce the amount of rubbish/recycling that you create Can you reuse any items – jars, ice cream containers? Can you buy items with less packaging, or buy in larger quantities rather than multi-packs?  Make sure recycling items such as bottles, cans and boxes are flattened to make space in your bin

Where can I get more information on recycling?  For general information about recycling go to  For information about council waste and recycling services go to: Or call Whitehorse City Council on  For information about items that can go into your recycling bin but can be recycled like mobile phones and car batteries go to
