What is “Genre”? How can you tell to which genre a book belongs?

Let’s begin with genre requirements Traditional Literature-4 Fantasy-3 Science Fiction-2 Memoir-1 Historical Fiction-4 Biography-2 Informational Text-7 Autobiography-2 Mystery-2 Poetry-2 Drama-2 Media Literacy-3 Free Choice-7

Traditional Literature: Stories that are passed down from one group to another in history. This includes: folktales, legends, fables, fairytales, tall tales and myths from different cultures

Fantasy: A story which includes elements that are impossible such as talking animals, mythical creatures such as dragons, or magic, such as dragons, or magic.

Science Fiction : A type of fantasy that uses science or technology. Examples include robots, time machines, set in the future. The technology does not have to available.

A type of autobiography that just tells a small story of that person’s life Memoir

Historical Fiction: A fictional story that takes place in a historical time period; the setting is real, but the characters are made up from the author’s imagination

Biography: The story of a real person, told by ANOTHER person may be a historical figure or current celebrity

Informational Text: Texts that provide facts about a variety of topics: sports, animals, science, history, careers, travel, space, etc, usually found in a magazine, newspaper, or academic journal

Autobiography: The story of a real person’s life written by that person; the author could be a political figure, historical figure, or current celebrity

Mystery: A suspenseful story about a puzzling event that is not solved until the end of the story.

Poetry: verse written to create a response of thought and feeling from the reader. It often uses rhythm and rhyme but not always!

Drama: Plays include stage directions, multiple characters, costume notes, and set descriptions; stories are told entirely through dialogue and should be performed
