For both educators and policymakers, the aspiration is to prepare students for college and career, because … it is now clear that college and career are no longer two distinct pathways. Massachusetts students who are college- and career-ready will demonstrate the knowledge, skills & abilities that are necessary to  successfully complete entry-level, credit- bearing college courses,  participate in certificate or workplace training programs, and  enter economically viable career pathways

In order to meet this goal, the Commonwealth has defined a set of  learning competencies,  intellectual capacities and  experiences (that are) essential for all students to become  lifelong learners;  positive contributors to their families, workplaces and communities; and successfully engaged citizens of a global 21st century.

All high school students should  develop a foundation in the academic disciplines identified in the MassCore course of study,  build competencies for workplace readiness and  focus on applying academic strategies to problem solving in diverse professional and life contexts, appropriate to individual student goals

The recommended program of studies includes:  four years of English,  four years of Math,  three years of a lab-based Science,  three years of history,  two years of the same foreign language,  one year of an arts program and  five additional "core" courses such as business education, health, and/or technology..

MassCore also includes additional learning opportunities including  AP classes,  dual enrollment,  a senior project,  online courses for high school or college credit, and  service or work-based learning

All HS students must meet the Commonwealth's Competency Determination (CD) standard, in addition to all local graduation requirements.... to ensure high school graduates have the knowledge and skills they need to succeed in college and in today's workplace. MCAS Tests:  Grade 10 in ELA & Math  Science & Technology/Engineering Tests o Biology o Chemistry o Introductory Physics o Technology/Engineering (MCAS = Massachusetts Comprehensive Assessment System)  

…college readiness (is) “... the level of preparation a student needs to succeed in credit-bearing courses in college. ‘Succeed’ is defined as completing entry- level courses at a level of understanding and proficiency that prepares the student for subsequent courses. (Kentucky Council on Postsecondary Education, n.d.).

Kentucky’s system-wide standards of readiness guarantee students access to credit-bearing coursework without the need for remediation in high school or college coursework or intervention programming. (Kentucky Council on Postsecondary Education, n.d.).

( Free online placement testing exams for students not meeting ACT benchmarks & having completing targeted intervention(s)) Success on KYOTE guarantees placement as college ready in subject area

Two Diploma Types:  Minimum High School Diploma  Pre College Diploma  Course Requirements are the same except World Languages for Pre College

For Both Diplomas: Student may substitute for Algebra, Algebra II, or Geometry - an integrated, applied interdisciplinary or technical/occupational course that prepares a student for a career path based on the student’s Individual Learning Plan

NY Regents – Three CCR Domains

The following Regents exams are required for all levels of diploma:  English/Language Arts  Integrated Algebra  Global History  US History & Government  Physical or Life Science Regents Diploma: Passing score of 65 and above on all 5 required Regents Exams

Regents Diploma with Advanced Designation: Passing score of 65 and above on required Regents Exams PLUS  Geometry, Algebra 2 and Trigonometry and  An additional Regents Science Exam &  3 years of a Language Other than English and the  Regents comprehensive assessment in that language when available. tml

Regents Diploma with Honors With Honors: “With honors" added to either Regents Diploma or Regents Diploma with Advanced Designation for students with an average score of 90 or more on all required Regents exams. Technical Endorsement: Students enrolled in a Career and Technical Education program earn this if they also complete an approved technical assessment, a work- based learning experience, and a work-skills employability profile.
