Agenda Topics  Need for Clarity on Requirements & Outcomes (Education Trust Research)  Examples of States’ College, Career, Community-Ready Requirements  Definitions  Course & Credit Requirements  Endorsements/Qualifications for Access to Post-Secondary Careers & Colleges

Despite rhetoric around College- & Career- Readiness, just 8 % of HS graduates complete a full College- & Career-preparatory curriculum (course of study) Nearly ½ of graduates complete neither a College- nor Career-ready course sequence. (High schools prioritizing credit accrual, treating graduation rather than CCR as the goal) © Meandering Toward Graduation: Transcript Outcomes of High School Graduates.  How many of our young people are completing a full college- & career-prep curriculum?  How do those patterns differ by race & socioeconomic status as well as students’ own aspirations? © Meandering Toward Graduation: Transcript Outcomes of High School Graduates. “U.S. Graduation Rate Hits New Record High” --- U.S. Department of Education, February 12, 2015 But… (Nationwide), thousands of students are testing into remedial reading, writing, or math courses. Employers report that high school graduates don’t have basic foundational skills to start in entry-level positions. © Meandering Toward Graduation: Transcript Outcomes of High School Graduates. For both educators and policymakers, the aspiration is to prepare students for college and career, because … it is now clear that college and career are no longer two distinct pathways. Most students will need to earn a postsecondary credential in order to achieve a family-sustaining wage in today’s economy. © Meandering Toward Graduation: Transcript Outcomes of High School Graduates.  Foundational academic content knowledge;  Cognitive strategies, (ex: collecting information & identifying & solving problems)  Learning skills and dispositions, such as goal-setting, persistence, time management, study skills;  Specialized content knowledge applicable to their intended path after graduation © Meandering Toward Graduation: Transcript Outcomes of High School Graduates. Massachusetts students who are college- and career-ready will demonstrate the knowledge, skills & abilities that are necessary to  successfully complete entry-level, credit- bearing college courses,  participate in certificate or workplace training programs, and  enter economically viable career pathways

In order to meet this goal, the Commonwealth has defined a set of  learning competencies,  intellectual capacities and  experiences (that are) essential for all students to become  lifelong learners;  positive contributors to their families, workplaces and communities; and successfully engaged citizens of a global 21st century.

All high school students should  develop a foundation in the academic disciplines identified in the MassCore course of study,  build competencies for workplace readiness and  focus on applying academic strategies to problem solving in diverse professional and life contexts, appropriate to individual student goals

The recommended program of studies includes:  four years of English,  four years of Math,  three years of a lab-based Science,  three years of history,  two years of the same foreign language,  one year of an arts program and  five additional "core" courses such as business education, health, and/or technology..

MassCore also includes additional learning opportunities including  AP classes,  dual enrollment,  a senior project,  online courses for high school or college credit, and  service or work-based learning

All HS students must meet the Commonwealth's Competency Determination (CD) standard, in addition to all local graduation requirements.... to ensure high school graduates have the knowledge and skills they need to succeed in college and in today's workplace. MCAS Tests:  Grade 10 in ELA & Math  Science & Technology/Engineering Tests o Biology o Chemistry o Introductory Physics o Technology/Engineering (MCAS = Massachusetts Comprehensive Assessment System)  

…college readiness (is) “... the level of preparation a student needs to succeed in credit-bearing courses in college. ‘Succeed’ is defined as completing entry- level courses at a level of understanding and proficiency that prepares the student for subsequent courses. (Kentucky Council on Postsecondary Education, n.d.).

Kentucky’s system-wide standards of readiness guarantee students access to credit-bearing coursework without the need for remediation in high school or college coursework or intervention programming. (Kentucky Council on Postsecondary Education, n.d.).

Two Diploma Types:  Minimum High School Diploma  Pre College Diploma  Course Requirements are the same except World Languages for Pre College

For Both Diplomas: Student may substitute for Algebra, Algebra II, or Geometry - an integrated, applied interdisciplinary or technical/occupational course that prepares a student for a career path based on the student’s Individual Learning Plan

There is no common definition or one single measure of college and career readiness. Research suggests: College and career readiness is defined by the content knowledge, skills, and habits that students need to be successful after high school whether in postsecondary education or training that leads to a career pathway k
