Nixon’s Second Term - easily defeated Dem George McGovern in many foreign policy achievements with Secretary of State Henry Kissinger: visit to China - Détente with the USSR - SALT Treaty - gradual withdrawal from Vietnam; 1973 done

The Watergate Scandal - even before scandal Nixon criticized for the “imperial” style of his presidency - Pentagon Papers controversy - Watergate burglary during 1972 campaign - Nixon gets in trouble for covering up the crime - issue was executive privilege vs power of Congress - 3 months of televised Senate hearings

Watergate continued - Vice Pres. Spiro Agnew resigned during investigation Gerald Ford was chosen as new VP - Nixon resigned when it became obvious he would be impeached in new President Ford started by giving Nixon a pardon for any crimes he might have committed while President

Gerald Ford as President - pardon of Nixon was very controversial - tried to deal with 1974 energy crisis caused by OPEC oil embargo in South Vietnam fell to North Vietnam - By 1976 election was public distrust of Republican Party and gov’t in general

The Election of Pres. Ford barely won Republican Party nomination from popular governor of California, Ronald Reagan - Democrats surprised many by nominating the governor of Georgia Jimmy Carter - Carter’s appeal was no connection to Washington politics, idealism, good civil rights record - Carter wins election by a narrow margin

The Carter Presidency - severe energy crisis; Dept. of Energy created - oil prices cause “stagflation” - Three Mile Island nuclear accident - illegal immigration and refugees controversial -Cuban Mariel boat lift - Haitian boat people - Carter supported the ERA, but it failed to pass

Carter continued Panama Canal Treaty - communist revolutions in Latin America Fall of Shah of Iran and the Iranian Hostage Crisis the Camp David Accords were Carter’s greatest achievement USSR invaded Afghanistan, Détente ended; US boycotted 1980 Summer Olympics in Moscow
