Creating a Plan of Action 6

Tell us what you remember about our last session: “Applying for College and More”

What did you talk about on your ride home? Did you make a list of 5 people or groups that could help you achieve your goal of reaching higher education?

Creating an Education Action Plan Make a Resource List Discuss where we go from here Celebrate with Us! Overview of Tonight’s Session

The Newly “Eds” Game 4-6 Volunteer Families One parent and one child per family Divide into a Parent Group and Student Group

What did you think of this activity? How do you think it relates to the topic of education? The Newly “Eds” Game

And Gabe? Remember Gabe and his education plan? We are going to make plans similar to his.

Parts of a Good Plan: 1.Goals need to be clear and specific 2.Necessary actions in order to achieve the goals 3.Difficulties/obstacles 4.Who or what can help me? 5.Dates or time limits to achieve the objective Building an Education Action Plan

Example of Good Goals Student Goal: I am going to pass my mathematics class Raise my GPA from 2.8 to 3.2 Family Goal: Go to family teacher conferences Help my child find a tutor Help my child save for college Schedule weekend times to look for scholarships together Building an Education Action Plan

Example of Poor Goals Family Goal: Help my son have success in school Help my son go to college Why aren’t these goals as good? Building an Education Action Plan

Each family will work on an Education Action Plan Share your Plans with the Group Building an Education Action Plan

Next Steps… What are the benefits of being involved with support groups or parent groups like this ? Are you interested in forming a support group amongst yourselves? Are students interested in forming club? A 4-H Club, a Juntos Club, etc.

What should we do to form this support group? Who wants or can help be a leader of this group? We suggest at least one or two parents, students, community leaders, and/or school adult volunteers Schedule a follow up meeting to complete a plan of action for your group/club at your next meeting Next Steps…

Ideas about what we can do together Write a list of: local agencies, organization, school personnel, parents, and support groups that can help assist you in the process of helping your children graduate high school and reach higher education.

 This survey will help you and us know how much you know now in comparison to when you began the program.  The survey will be used to identify the benefits of this program and how to improve it. Where Are We Now? Survey
