Competition & Consumer Law – Week 1 Agenda Administrative stuff Course Overview Assessment Starting thinking like trade practices lawyers - Economic and policy considerations 2 (c) Cathryn Nolan | RMIT University

Admin: Student Consultation Phone: (03) I’m a casual lecturer, so I don’t have an office on campus. I will endeavour to deal with your s within 48 hours. Unless it’s really urgent, that’s the best way to contact me I’m happy to arrange consulting times with you before and after class (but prefer to do so by appointment) I am also happy to arrange to have telephone discussions with you – again by appointment There’s no such thing as a stupid question… at the same time I encourage you to do what you can to be precise and clear about your questions…. You might find that in doing that you find the answers! 3 (c) Cathryn Nolan | RMIT University

So now you know something about me – let’s get to know each other a bit better Do you know everyone sitting with you? If you do – think about moving and joining another group Let’s spend 5 minutes getting to know each other a little better 4 (c) Cathryn Nolan | RMIT University

Admin: Expectations We’ll start and finish on time You’ll ask questions as we go – but trust me if I defer them We’ll all participate – that means letting everyone have an opportunity to participate in their own way Face 2 Face Students - Speak up / bear with me when I repeat questions or answers (and remind me if I forget) to support our colleagues doing this with OUA) OUA students – use the discussion boards to share your questions and contribute your answers. You will read the prescribed pre reading and think about any questions / case studies that you are asked to prepare in advance of a class I will endeavour to respond to your questions / s within 48 hours. Phones – I don’t want to see or hear them Computers – only for note taking (if you really must!) What else? 5 (c) Cathryn Nolan | RMIT University

Target timing / structure for classes: 5:30 – 6:506:50 – 7:05 (break) 7:05-8:30pm 6 I’ll endeavour to link the lectures to myRMIT within 24 hours – plenty of time for OUA students to spend some quality time with those of us in the Face 2 Face classes on the weekends! (c) Cathryn Nolan | RMIT University :30 – 6:50 6:50 – 7:05 (break) 7:05-8:30pm I’ll endeavour to link the lectures to myRMIT within 24 hours – plenty of time for OUA students to spend some quality time with those of us in the Face 2 Face classes on the weekends!

Our plan of attack….. 7 Competition & Consumer Law Weeks 1 – 2 : Introduction to key themes and concepts, refreshing research skills and selecting research topics Week 2-3 Legislative overview Week 4 Administration & EnforcementWeek 5-6 Consumer Protection Weeks 7 – 9: Focus on Competition issues / Unfair Contracts Laws Week 10: Transactions, infrastructureWeek 11: Public & Private Remedies Week 12: Problem Solving / Wildcard Today For a detailed, week by week list of the topics that we’ll cover and the preparation required for each class see the Teaching Schedule in myRMIT Week 6 class – generalised feedback first assignment Feedback on assignments / Exam preparation First assessment due 15 August (end week 4) 20% Assignment 2 Due (Essay) 20% (c) Cathryn Nolan | RMIT University

The approach: A Rigid Policy of Absolute Flexibility! We need to work through the content – and there’s a lot of it. You need to prepare an individual research paper – the assessment tasks are designed to ensure that you can demonstrate that you achieve the learning objectives for the course and that you also receive exposure to the rigour of legal research. I am happy to work with you as a group to ensure that you get the support that you need from the classes to prepare the assessment. I will endeavour to point out along the way where areas of discussion might be relevant to your thinking or research for your research paper. I am happy to focus on the issues and areas that are important to you – but we do need to make sure that we cover all of the content. Research requires collaboration – just as lawyers are required to collaborate in the real world. The assessment tasks are also designed to foster respectful collaboration and engagement. I’m going to encourage you to work in groups and to share your ideas and findings. You know what broad areas we’re going to cover and when I plan to cover them – I am very open to changing the order that we do things – but if you ask me to do that, we need to ensure that there’s plenty of notice for your colleagues. 8 (c) Cathryn Nolan | RMIT University

To be successful in this class you need to be prepared to take responsibility for your own learning Your learning Lectures Research Textbooks / Case preparation Interaction with other students 9 (c) Cathryn Nolan | RMIT University Your learning Lectures Research Textbooks / Case preparation Interaction with other students
