Surgical Suture Material BY RANGANATHAN.D B.Sc .,Operation theatre technology

SUTURE MATERIALS Suture Types of Suture *Absorbable suture The word "suture" describes any strand of material used to ligate (tie) blood vessels or approximate (bring close together) tissues. Sutures are used to close wounds. Types of Suture *Absorbable suture *Non-Absorbable suture

ABSORBABLE SUTURE *MONOFILAMENT (eg.,polydioxanone(PDS),polyester,copolymer polyglyconate). Polyglecaprone25(monocryl). *BRAIDED (eg.,polygylcolic acid(dexan), lactomer glycolide,polyglactin910) Catgut.

NON-ABSORBABLE SUTURE MONOFILAMENT eg., polypropylene(prolene),polyster(ethibond, mersilene, dacron), Surgical steel. MULTIFILAMENT eg.,silk ,cotton.

PROLENE(Polypropylene) Polymer of propylene Monofilament & non Absorbable High tensile suturing Wound healing is good Primary wound healing

Prolene cont…, Avoidance of scarring. Reliability. Synthetic material. Colour : clear blue. Biological inert

Prolene cont…, Sterilization :ethylene oxide sterilization Sizes available:10-0 to 2 gauge Needle type : swaged type( atraumatic needle) Suture removal :after 9 to 12 days Available needle type :cutting , taper cutting, conventional cutting , reverse cutting ,blunt needle , round body.

Uses of Prolene Used in soft tissue closure & skin closure Mainly used in cardio vascular surgery & general surgeries , orthopaedic surgery. Used to fix the prolene mesh in hernioplasty Within the body cavity, where they will remain permanently encapsulated in tissue.

Prolene cont…,

Complication of prolene # .Infection. # .Sinus formation. # .Suture extrution . # .Poorest knot security. # .Less statisfactory than vicryl, because of stiffness of the materials . # .Hernia formation. # .fascial dehiscence

PDS II(POLYDIOXANONE) Polydioxanone Suture,Polyster polymer. Synthetic Absorbable suture Monofilament suture Violet ,blue in colour Tensile strength Post implantation

PDS CONT…, Absorption rate:180 days ETHYLENE OXIDE STERILIZATION AVAILABLE DIAMETERS: 8mm to 110mm AVAILABLE LENGTH: 70cm,90cm,150cm(loop) NEEDLE: 1/2 Blunt point , ½ ,3/8 taper point , 1/2,5/8,3/8 circle taper point plus , ½,3/8 reverse cutting , spatulated 5/6 circle Absorption rate:180 days

PDS CONT…, RANGE OF SUTURE SIZE:7-0 TO 2 INDICATION: Indicated when long-term wound support is needed. Uses: Its mainly used in paediatric surgery.
