Your case… death-row-series-2-2-punishmenthttp:// death-row-series-2-2-punishment - the case - the jury

Some more information… As a group read the newspaper article about the Shawn Ford case to help you make your decision. Discuss these questions as a group: Will you take into account the fact he apologised when making your decision? Why/why not? If you were their daughter, would you want him to be executed? Why/why not? On a scale of 1-5 how far do you agree with his lawyer that his low IQ score should mean he shouldn’t be executed? 1 = Agree 5 = Disagree What questions would you ask Shawn if you had the chance to interview him?

Class Count Do you think that Shawn Ford should be executed for murdering his girlfriend’s parents? Yes Not sure No

Jury Discussion In your group imagine you are the jury and you are being given time to discuss your view – remember you need to come to a verdict. If you do not agree with the death penalty, what alternative punishment do you suggest? What are the aggravating and mitigating circumstances? Aggravating Circumstance: something that makes a crime more serious, e.g. burgling someone’s house while they are asleep in bed. Mitigating Circumstance: something that makes a crime less serious, e.g. you have problems in your personal life that have affected your behaviour.

Argue your case… Now that you have had time to discuss your sentence as a group, you are now going to individually write a persuasive speech to give to the other jury members to try to get them to agree with you. You will each have 1 minute to explain whether or not you think Shawn Ford should receive the death penalty. When you are writing you will need to use everything on your writing palette. Keep checking it as you go! Exam links: This will help you write a conclusion to an exam question next lesson.
