Presentation transcript:

When the king is being attacked directly by an opponent’s piece we say the king is in check.

You can CHOOSE one of three things: Avoid. Move the king to a square which is not being attacked by an enemy piece. Block. Move a piece between the King and the enemy piece to block the check. Capture. Capture the attacking piece.

Run away to safety!

You can one of three things: Avoid. Move the king to a square which is not being attacked by an enemy piece. Block. Move a piece between the King and the enemy piece to block the check. Capture. Capture the attacking piece.

Create a barrier!

You can one of three things: Avoid. Move the king to a square which is not being attacked by an enemy piece. Block. Move a piece between the King and the enemy piece to block the check. Capture. Capture the attacking piece.

Attack is the best form of defence!

If the King is in check and cannot get out of check then we say the King is checkmated and the game is lost.

Set up this situation yourself and attempt to checkmate.

 Use the Rook to restrict the opponent's King.  Support the Rook with the King.  Confine the King to a box and make the box smaller if possible.  If it is not possible to make the box smaller, move the King (a waiting move to force back the opponent's King.)  When the opponent's King is at the side of the board look for one of the checkmating patterns to win the game!
