Growth & Development in CA In 1962, California became the most populous state in the nation The growth of CA’s population was urban – or rather suburban – and was greatest in the southern part of the state The downturn in the economy and migration to CA late 1960s throughout the 1970s – factors

Milton Glaser, California: Here It Comes! (1969) was published during the tumultuous decade when California emerged as the nation’s most populous state, Time’s cover story describes the Golden State as “the mirror of America as it will become, or at least as the hothouse for its most rousing fads, fashions, trends and ideas.”

The 1970 census confirmed that California was the most populous state in the union This discerning cartoon by Newton Pratt in the Sacramento Bee illustrates some of the problems of primacy

Transportation Transportation was one of the many fields in which CA’s broader economic and population trends were reflected The state’s “love affair with the automobile” continued - there were 3 registered automobiles in CA for every 4 persons of driving age NorCal public transportation vs. SoCal public transportation

Reapportionment The population boom of the 1950s and 1960s also led to increased demands for reform of the state’s system of political representation Reynolds v. Sims (1964) case The affects of reapportionment for NorCal & SoCal

Education in California California public schools remained impoverished after WWII California school-age population grew twice as fast as its general population The Master Plan for Higher Education (1960) University campus turmoil – UC Berkeley, UC Santa Barbara Chicano Moratorium Committee

Third World Liberation strike at Sather Gate, UC Berkeley, Students at UC Berkeley supported the strike that started at San Francisco State

Asian American Activism Expands Asian American movement organizations emerged to address problems facing the urban poor and working class Asian American activist organized to save historical sites Philadelphia Chinatown and Little Tokyo in Los Angeles Another matter that emerged by the late 1960s was that of renters’ rights and affordable housing The fight for the I-Hotel in San Francisco

A large group of protestors and onlookers prepares for the International Hotel eviction, August 1977

“The Struggle for Low Income Housing” by Jim Dong and Nancy Hom, This mural depicts San Francisco community activists opposition to the demolition of the International Hotel

Gender Matters Discrimination on the basis of gender and sexual orientation became a matter of considerable controversy in California Women elected to the state assembly has remained low Sexual orientation also emerged as an issue of widespread public interest in the later decades of the 20 th century
