Skills-based Outcomes Vocabulary Acquisition + Communication Skills + Collaboration Skills + Content Knowledge +

Foreign language Standards 5 C’S Communication Students will be able to talk and interact in Turkish while they are cooking Menemen. Students will be able to name meals in Turkish and also will be able to produce correct pronunciation for Menemen dish. Communities: Beyond school setting: Students may have a family trip to a Turkish restaurant and order Menemen dish. Cultures: Students will see pictures and also actual objects and video used to prepare Turkish Menemen. Comparisons: Students will be able to compare American and Turkish food habits and social importance. Connections : Students will see differences and similarities between Turkish and American ways of preparing and eating food.

Communication Modes Interpretive Students will watch a video about Turkish Menemen dish. Students will see a picture of ingredients to prepare Turkish Menemen. Interpersonal Students will introduce the ingredients to cook Menemen. Students will find a word which is written on the smart board and be ready to report to the group the meaning of the word. Presentational Students will cook Menemen.

Materials Smart board YouTube video Authentic pictures Handouts( Words and phrases) Fresh vegetables, oil, salt, and eggs. Cooking ware.

Pre-requisite Skill Doing research about how to cook Menemen. Ingredients 8 tbsp olive oil 2 long green peppers halved, seeded, and finely chopped 2 large succulent tomatoes peeled and finely diced 4 large eggs lightly whisked pinch salt Directions Warm up the olive oil in a non-stick frying pan. Add the chopped green peppers and cook on the medium heat until the peppers start softening, yet do not pick up any brown color (about 3 min). Stir in the diced tomatoes (make sure you find the most succulent tomatoes the season allows) and simmer for about 5-7 min, or until most of the moisture evaporates. Eventually fold in the lightly whisked eggs. If you like menemen on the runnier side, just stir the eggs 2-3 times and remove the pan from the heat. Otherwise, continue cooking for about 1-2 minutes, gently stirring. You don’t want to overcook your Menemen until it’s dry and crumbling: be proud to serve the still rather runny and utterly delicious Turkish scrambled eggs with plenty of white bread.

Grouping Strategy Small Group (2-3 students per group) Will tell others the steps of menemen in Turkish (HLL). Large Group (4-6 students per group) Will each do chopping, cutting etc..

Activity Activity 1: Instructor plays a video about Turkish Menemen. 2: Instructor checks students comprehension by asking them name of the objects to prepare Turkish Menemen. 3: Instructor writes the words and phrases on the board. 4: Instructor practices the pronunciation of the words with students both in groups and individually. 5: Instructor tries to solicit the meaning of the words from students by using pictures and objects. Differentiation: Instructor asks heritage learners to write/read the Menemen recipe

Activity 2 Activity 2: ( Time 30 minutes) 1:Students use part of the classroom as a kitchen, or students may use school’s kitchen to prepare Menemen.

2:Students chop the vegetables with instructions in Turkish. Heritage learners say the words in Turkish to classmates. 3:Students pour oil and put vegetables in a pot in order to cook Menemen. Instructor ensures that students do not burn themselves. Differentiation: Heritage learners can express his/her likes and dislikes about the steps of preparing Menemen, while classmates are chopping, cutting and putting in a pot.

Activity 3 Students prepare lunch tables using Turkish vocabulary and phrases.

Activty 4 1:Teacher asks students to make groups and role play as if inviting each other for lunch.

Assessment Task  Peer Evaluations+  Student Reflections+

Extension Ideas: Students can cook Menemen at home. Areas of Concern: Students may burn and cut themselves while they cook. To prevent this, the teacher provides only plastic knives. Post Lesson Reflection: This part is completed only after delivery of the lesson.

Assesment Guessing Game The teacher distributes to students different items in paper bags. Without looking, students touch, shake, smell and feel the contents of the bag, and try to guess what the contents of the bag are. Those who guess correctly are given a prize (since summer camp students don’t receive a grade at the end of the program). Differentiation: Heritage students can lead the game, giving the commands to other students such as shake it, smell it, etc. Heritage students can tell how often their families cook Menemen, and who likes it the most in their families.

EXIT CARD Students draw a picture or write any vocabulary that they enjoyed learning. Teacher gives them a sticker to encourage them.
