8 India’s Economy The independence-era Indian economy (from 1947 to 1991) was based on a mixed economy combining features of capitalism and socialism. In 1991, India adopted liberal and free-market principles and liberalized its economy to international trade, following which; the country's economic growth progressed at a rapid pace, with relatively large increases in per-capita incomes. The Indian economy is on a robust growth trajectory and is committed to stable annual growth rate with ethics and equity in diverse and vibrant society. The economy of India is the tenth-largest in the world by nominal Gross Domestic Product (GDP) and the third-largest by purchasing power parity (PPP). CAETS INAE

9 India’s Economy (contd.) India is one of the G-20 major economies and a member of BRICS, an association of emerging national economies: Brazil, Russia, India, China and South Africa. India is a country today which poses enough challenges with opportunities in Energy, Healthcare, Infrastructure, Agriculture. India has a largest demographic advantage in the world. INAE invites Member Academies of CAETS to participate and explore in these challenges and opportunities. INAE

Music Music  Indian Classical music (Hindustani & Carnatic) Instrumental Music (Khyal and Ragas) Instrumental Music (Khyal and Ragas)  Four types of musical instruments – stringed, wind, percussion and bells. Festivals Festivals  Religious festivals and festivals to celebrate change of season or harvesting.  Dance, music, dazling attires are integral part of these festivals  Goa Carnival, Alleppey Boat Race, Bihu Festival reflect the diversity of land.  Festivals such as Diwali, Raksha Bandhan, Dussehra, Eid etc. celebrated in all parts of country. Handicrafts Handicrafts  Famous Handicrafts – Furniture, Jewellery, Metal craft, Painting, Pottery, Stone Textiles, Wood Craft, Floor Coverings.  Sculpture – Stone and bronze figures. Pilgrimage Pilgrimage  Kedarnath or Badrinath  Devine Buddha pilgrimages, Bodhgaya and Sarnath visited by Buddhist pilgrims. Heritage Heritage  Monuments and heritage sites depicting flavour of Hinduism, Buddhism, Islam, Jainism and Chistianity. Languages Languages  22 officially recognised languages.  Hindi is official language.  English is an associate official language. CAETS INAE
