Chapter 22 Stories By: Jenny Nys

Living with Dad In 1923 Douglas suffered from an emotional breakdown. Douglas was living with her dad and his second wife Lillias. Douglas was unhappy living with her father. One night her father found Douglas bed empty.

Leaving the Herald Doctor diagnosed Douglas with nerve fatigued. Douglas left the Herald to go write fiction stories. Her first story was sold in 1924 to Black Mask. Douglas would use the Everglades in her stories.

Stories In 16 years Douglas published 57 stories. When Douglas started out writing she got paid $ 500 for each story. At one point her pay for her stories was $1200. She bought land from Henry and Bertha Schulz. Also so did some of her friends.

The House Douglas hires George Hyde to build her house. Douglas house was very open. In 1926 the house was hit by a hurricane and it held up. $ 250 dollars was the insurance settlement for the repairs on her house. Her house was way in off the road and this gave her privacy for her writings.

More Stories In the first year living the house, 20 serialized novels and 437 short stories were published. Two of her stories were selected for publication in O. Henry Memorial Award collections. A few years later it won another recognition but this time it was for the play.

More Stories Cont. In 1977 Wellesley College officials presented her with alumni award for nature writing.

Conclusion This whole chapter was on Douglas stories and as you can see she wrote a lot of stories. This chapter has mostly passages from her stories. Every thing in Douglas life has shaped her writing. South Florida she believed, not only provided material for her but inspired people to be creative.
