Status of the Muon detector Alessandro Cardini CERN & INFN Cagliari Thanks do Davide, Rafael, Maurizio, Oleg, for part of the material included here

CERN, 24/11/2008A. Cardini / CERN & INFN Cagliari2 Overview I will present a report on the current status of muon detector (M1 and M2-M5) and on the last months’ activities Burkhard will report on M1 alignement and installation plans

CERN, 24/11/2008A. Cardini / CERN & INFN Cagliari3 M1 Services Most of the cables were already installed before 2008 run Signal and control cables connectorized, tested, connected Gas pipes installation + Cable/Gas pipes arrangement at cable chain extremes (protections) A-side C-side

CERN, 24/11/2008A. Cardini / CERN & INFN Cagliari4 M1 Gas System (MWPC + GEM) MWPC gas system –already commissioned –Already part of the M2-M5 recirculation loop (up to internal bypasses) GEM gas system –Added 5  m pore metal filters at the input of both distribution racks –Gas flowmeters and mixer ready and installed –All sensors/valves tested –Last Friday: final tunings to guarantee that chambers will always be in overpressure –We will test gas circulation this week with external bypasses A-sideC-side

CERN, 24/11/2008A. Cardini / CERN & INFN Cagliari5 M1 PVSS Projects ODE –All M1 projects installed and tested (Maurizio) FEE –ELMB firmware updated –Projects installed –Threshold scan modified for GEM FEB Hierarchy Chambers’ testing tools – for M1 we will the final system (PVSS) to test chambers during installation –Work in progress by Rafael and Davide –Will try to converge this week together with Davide in order to have a “Test A”-like procedure in PVSS

CERN, 24/11/2008A. Cardini / CERN & INFN Cagliari6 M1 FEE PVSS Preliminary Tests One GEM chamber is present on M1R1 side A (CMB 18A1); Driver for USB-CAN controller (Systec) installed and CANopen OPC server version re-installed; ELMB Firmware updated; FEE Projects installed on M1 with “LHCb-standard” port configuration; Whole communication Project-Cardiac tested; Some functionality already tested and debugged when needed;

CERN, 24/11/2008A. Cardini / CERN & INFN Cagliari7 M1: Detector’s Test during installation During chamber installation two tests are foreseen on all Front-End Boards: Measurement of the noise level with CARDIAC(GEM) internal counters while scanning the discriminator thresholds (threshold scan): –Automatic evaluation of the noise level of each channel; –Individuate dead or disconnected channels; –Result fit identifies bad CARIOCA(GEM) channels; Connectivity test by means of the ODE: –Check the connections between SB and Chambers (I 2 C) and connections between Chambers and DAQ (LVDS)

CERN, 24/11/2008A. Cardini / CERN & INFN Cagliari8 M1 Threshold scan status After some bug fixing, a dedicated panel was developed to allow to perform a threshold scan on a single chamber and to analyze the results A whole crate (a station side) could be tested in less ~30 minutes. However you need 3 minutes to download results from each ELMB Chamber to be tested Chamber connections Threshold scan management Test results Text Noise results: it is possible to plot he noise level of each channel for a chosen threshold Noise results: it is possible to plot he noise level of each channel for a chosen threshold

CERN, 24/11/2008A. Cardini / CERN & INFN Cagliari9 M1: Connectivity Test Functions and panels are already there (Connectivity, Timing etc.) and they were tested in local; ODE project – ODEMON v.1.6 – installed and fully prepared for M1 ODE’s are already linked in the hierarchy; Some tests between ODE and L0 trigger were already done (this means that at least a part of the tools working for M2-M5 were also used for M1); What is still missing: – Connection maps between chambers and ODE for the GEM; – Connection maps between chambers and SB; – M1 Chamber’s linking to the Hierarchy; Connection maps SB-Chambers are missing and without them chambers Device Units cannot be created and therefore they cannot be linked

CERN, 24/11/2008A. Cardini / CERN & INFN Cagliari10 M1 Electronics Commissioning Tell1 firmware installed (Giacomo) ODE link commissioning to Tell1 done (Giacomo) ODE links commissioning to L0MU done (Caterina, Renaud, Ale) All up and running smoothly (oh yeah!) M1A Racks

CERN, 24/11/2008A. Cardini / CERN & INFN Cagliari11 HVGEM Hardware installation completed OPC CANopen server installed and configured on MUHVC02W PC Simple commands and defaults are correctly executed from a test PVSS panel Software in development (Matteo Mara (CA) + Fabrizio Murtas (LNF)) in close contact with Michela to guarantee a proper integration in the already existing HV projects muhvc02w SYSTEC HVGEM 20m CANbus cable D2 D3

CERN, 24/11/2008A. Cardini / CERN & INFN Cagliari12 M1 Closing Test OK – all very smooth ! PS/SPD open M1 closed

CERN, 24/11/2008A. Cardini / CERN & INFN Cagliari13 M2-M5 Water Leak Detection A different method w.r.t. what is used elsewhere in LHCb Nikolai found a water-sensistive tape that could be readout with the existing system This tape is following all water pipes in all M2-M5 racks Very sensitive: ~10 water drops on the tape give an alarm We really need this sensitivity: we have HV modules all over the place! System up and running! (and already giving alarms on occasional very small water leaks) Note: for the moment M1 racks have the “standard” LHCb water leak detection system – common to all other racks in the bunker – sensitive only to large water leaks

CERN, 24/11/2008A. Cardini / CERN & INFN Cagliari14 M2-M5 Air Cooling system Two big turbines installed, one for each side Variators purchased and installed but not yet connected Connection to cooling water to be done

CERN, 24/11/2008A. Cardini / CERN & INFN Cagliari15 M2-M5 HV Studies on PNPI System PNPI system consist of 8 Master Board modules and 56 RDB modules (+ 2 main power supplies) Master Board ok after summer repairs Problems on RDBs have been found and debugged, and some modules have been replaced in the last months

CERN, 24/11/2008A. Cardini / CERN & INFN Cagliari16 M2-M5 HV Studies on PNPI System Test HV on Main P.S. =2.5 kV, Vset=2.7kV

CERN, 24/11/2008A. Cardini / CERN & INFN Cagliari17 Oleg’s Conclusions (17/11/08) After about half of year of system in operation we have 2.5% floated voltage sensors in RDBs and approximately the same percent of noisy channels. (60% of floated channels are really bad) There are HV-resistors of both types inside of floated channels. So, we shouldn’t replace the resistors of US type in our system, what is planning by CMS with analogical HV-system. -I assume that it is “infant mortality” of elements. And it is normal percentage! -To improve the situation we should monitor the system and change or recalibrate the problematic channels. -Before beam we need the instruments for recalibration in situ and Evgeny is working for it. -To make the system perfect we should plan several iterations of work what was done by me last month.

CERN, 24/11/2008A. Cardini / CERN & INFN Cagliari18 Oleg’s conclusions on MWPCs In total (99,8 % - OK): –3 Gaps are disconnected because of short circuits –2 Gaps have a dark current depending from humidity –1 Gap has a dark current, under training –4 Gaps have a sparks of unknown nature Do we need flushing of chambers by nominal gas mixture? –Arguments: aging, cleaning –Proposal: performing of the 2-3 weeks cycle with CF 4 once in next year

CERN, 24/11/2008A. Cardini / CERN & INFN Cagliari19 M2-M5 Timing Tests About 5% of muon channels were masked during “2008 run” A systematic recheck on all masked channels is now ongoing (Caterina, Giovanni P., Francesco D., Adalberto, Matteo P.), will take at least until Christmas All timing test results need to be interpreted by experts, then repairs can start Some ODEs have already been recovered, but part of these channels will need an hardware intervention (Nikolai)– it will be a long job... Francesco D. will be at CERN up to Christmas, and others will help, but for next year we definitely need a person (or more) dedicated to this activity... Manpower during next year - starting from January and for ~3 months - is a critical point if we want to complete this job!!!

CERN, 24/11/2008A. Cardini / CERN & INFN Cagliari20 M2-M5 L0MU tests This study was started because we found some mistmatches between MUON and L0MU data during runs taken with cosmics in September  See Julien presentation

CERN, 24/11/2008A. Cardini / CERN & INFN Cagliari21

CERN, 24/11/2008A. Cardini / CERN & INFN Cagliari22 M2-M5 PVSS Projects’ Status All projects are now working with the LHCb-standard port numbers; ODE and Hierarchy projects have been registered as services with automatic start and stop in case of shutdown Integration with the L0muon trigger to allow the automatic optical link check (connectivity and BER test) The release 1.6, already fully prepared for M1, shows as its greatest novelty, OdeToolbox, a collection of interactive utilities to accomplish rapidly some operations "by expert" FEE project version 1.5 (bug fixes and new recipe management tools) ready to be installed and tested

CERN, 24/11/2008A. Cardini / CERN & INFN Cagliari23 M2-M5 PVSS Projects’ Status a new CVS repository has been created: lbdemons it will contain the sources of all the ECS projects involving the Muon chambers, the ODE and the DAQ hierarchy lbdemons is now partially populated and it can be visited at: What is still to be done: the system for the automatic and continuous monitoring of the settings the procedures to store the recipes into the Configuring DB

CERN, 24/11/2008A. Cardini / CERN & INFN Cagliari24 M1-M5 December Plans M1 –Install a few remaining HV+LV GEM cables –Start installing GEM detectors (8/12) –Alignement of the walls –Support installation M2-M5 –Gas System Maintenance: no gas on chambers (  no HV) for 2 weeks (1/12 and 8/12) –1-day Opening/closing stations to adjust end-switches –Continue work on non-time-aligned channels See Burkhard’s presentation
