The Id, Ego, and Superego Source: Hazell with Blair additions

 Austrian neurologist  Born 1856; died 1939  Groundbreaking work in psychology; often called “father of psychoanalysis”  Carl Jung studied under Freud

A person accidentally says something or uses the wrong name, and it reveals what the person really desires.  Bob has just started a new relationship with a girl he met at school. While talking to her one afternoon, he accidentally calls her by his ex- girlfriend's name.

Freud believed that our minds are divided into two main parts: the conscious and the unconscious The conscious mind includes everything we are aware of: the things we can talk about rationally. The unconscious mind is a bank of feelings, thoughts and memories that we are not aware of. Most of these things are unacceptable or unpleasant. ▫ The unconscious DOES affect our behavior.

 Freud would say that this slip is no accident.  Psychoanalysts believe that we all have inner forces that we are not aware of that direct our behavior.  So Freud would say that Bob’s slip reveals that he has unresolved feelings for his ex (the unconscious mind.)

Superego Ego Id The things of which we are aware/reveal to others What is hidden from public view

 “It is the dark, inaccessible part of our personality, what little we know of it we have learnt from our study of the dream work and of the construction of neurotic symptoms, and most of this is of a negative character and can be described only as a contrast to the ego. We all approach the id with analogies: we call it a chaos, a cauldron full of seething excitations... It is filled with energy reaching it from the instincts, but it has no organization, produces no collective will, but only a striving to bring about the satisfaction of the instinctual needs subject to the observance of the pleasure principle.”  [Freud, New Introductory Lectures on Psychoanalysis (1933)]

Which character(s) is/are representing the Id? What evidence do we have to support our theories?

 “The ego is that part of the id which has been modified by the direct influence of the external world... The ego represents what may be called reason and common sense, in contrast to the id, which contains the passions... in its relation to the id it is like a man on horseback, who has to hold in check the superior strength of the horse; with this difference, that the rider tries to do so with his own strength, while the ego uses borrowed forces.” [Freud, The Ego and the Id (1923)]

Which character(s) is/are representing the Ego? The evidence?

 “The Super-ego can be thought of as a type of conscience that punishes misbehavior with feelings of guilt. For example: having extra- marital affairs.” [Reber, Arthur S. (1985). The Penguin Dictionary of Psychology. Viking Press.]

Who is the Superego? Textual evidence?
