The end of life Aim: to revise body and soul, and life after death Starter: 20 questions Write your answer on your whiteboard and hold it up

Exam question from last week. Sections a, b, c –vast majority fine/full marks Section d- generally needed more explanation/more detail- include lent and reasons for it, period of penitence, practising self discipline, showing dedication Section e- A02 question. This is the one you all generally need to work on. This is very normal. Look at the example answer, and compare yours. What does the example answer do that yours doesn’t?

One of your answers!!: Most Christians would agree with this statement because they believe that God gives them their food, therefore you should thank him for what he has given you. Some Christians would not agree with this because it is you who has to get the food and put the labour in to get it. I believe that farmers work laboriously and shop keepers as well work hard, therefore they should be thanked, not God. God doesn’t work hard all spring and summer to get a good harvest and doesn’t earn the money either. Many Christians believe it is God that makes the harvest good and it is He that helps us to do well at work to afford the food. It is He that enables us to eat all the fruit and vegetables and meat. Most Christians believe everyone should thank God for what we have. (7 marks)

The grade boundaries are as follows: A*=90% A=80% B=70% C=60% D=50% E=40% F=30% G=20% U=under 20% Each exam paper represents 25% of your final grade. YES it is possible to write one rubbish answer and make it up with a brilliant one, BUT REALLY EVERY QUESTION COUNTS!!!! You are aiming for at least 60% of the marks for every question just to get a C-for example that means that for your A02 question you need to get 8 marks.

Revision for today: BODY AND SOUL Christians believe that as well as a mind and a body, humans also have a soul. This is the part which makes a person unique It is not physical It lives on after the body has died The part of a human that allows them to relate to God

“God created man in his own image” This suggests that humans are unique from other animals

It also states in the Bible that all creatures were formed out of the dust of the Earth, but that when Adam was formed : “ God breathed into his nostrils the breath of life” Christians take this to mean that humans have a soul

Christians believe in the immortality of the soul because: Jesus conquered death when he was resurrected and ascended into heaven References in the gospels suggesting life in a spiritual realm There seems to be something non-material and immortal about the human mind

The body/soul conflict Many Christians believe that the body and soul are often in conflict. The body wants desires and pleasures to be fulfilled whilst the soul wants to please God. St Paul offered guidance, saying that people should let their spirit guide them, as the soul was more important than the body.

Paul also taught that when the body dies, the soul lives on forever, just as Jesus lives forever after his resurrection. Christians can expect that they too will be raised back to life because of what happened to Jesus.

Understandings of heaven, hell and purgatory. Hell In the past belief in heaven and hell played a central part in Christian teaching. In the Middle Ages Christians were very preoccupied with hell and thought of it as a place of everlasting torture for people who had turned their backs on Christianity and committed wicked deeds. Today, though there are Christians who believe hell is a reality for non- Christians, most think of hell as a way of describing being separated from God forever.

Purgatory In Roman Catholic teaching, purgatory is a state after death, for people who are not completely ready to go straight to heaven. The souls stay in purgatory until they are free from sin. Roman Catholics often pray for the souls of those who have died, in the hope they will not spend too long in purgatory.

Revise ideas about life after death on pages You could: Write bullet points on the information Draw a spider diagram or mind map of heaven, hell and purgatory and salvation and redemption Make some revision cards of heaven, hell, and purgatory salvation and redemption

JUDGEMENT DAY Christians say that God has two roles: As creator, and as judge After death God will judge each human individually according to the way they have lived their lives, their faith and their actions. According to the Apostles Creed, God will judge the “living and the dead” at the end of time. Christians who have believed and responded to Jesus will be rewarded, those who haven't will be punished.

The Parable of the Sheep and the Goats This parable is used to teach the idea that when the Day of Judgement comes humans will be separated into two groups. Those who have lived good lives and followed Jesus will be rewarded whilst those who have not are damned to an eternity in hell.

There is a very strong relationship between life on earth, judgement and the afterlife. According to Christians, it is your life and actions on earth that determines how you are judged and where you will spend eternity. Christians live their lives always aware of the consequences of the afterlife. This encourages many people to live morally, according to God`s law. Christians believe they should recognise when they do wrong and confess it to God in order to achieve forgiveness.

Choose one of these exam questions to answer: “When people die that is the end” “There is no evidence that humans have a soul” Discuss this statement. You should include different, supported points of view and a personal statement.
