The Apostles’ Creed A Guide to the Ancient Statement of Faith www..com Session 1: The Nature of Creeds

The Nature of Creeds What is a creed? A creed is a formal statement of religious belief; a confession of faith. www..com

The Nature of Creeds What might be considered a statement of faith? Why is it important for Christians to have statements of faith like a creed? In light of the fact that we have the Bible, why would it be necessary to have creeds? How would you respond to someone who believes there is no reason for creeds? www..com

The Importance of Creeds Biblical examples of creeds: 1 Timothy 3:16 What is the message of this passage? How is this passage a statement of faith? Could this be considered a biblical creed? Why, or why not? www..com

The Importance of Creeds Biblical examples of creeds: Philippians 2:5-11 What is the message of this passage? How is this passage a statement of faith? Could this be considered a biblical creed? Why, or why not? Can you think of other examples of creeds in Scripture? www..com

The Importance of Creeds Creeds help us define the boundaries of our faith. Many creeds define the basic beliefs of Christianity, which has a foundation of faith. Creeds are not equal to Scripture or considered authoritative; however, they help us express our faith in written and spoken form. www..com

The Apostles’ Creed Early in Christianity’s history, this creed was most likely used as a summary of Christian doctrine for baptismal candidates in the churches of Rome. This creed was possibly created to refute heresy or to teach new converts the heart of our beliefs and faith. www..com

The Apostles’ Creed This week, reflect on the meaning of each statement contained within the Apostles’ Creed. I believe in God, the Father Almighty, Creator of heaven and earth, and in Jesus Christ, his only Son, our Lord, who was conceived by the Holy Spirit, born of the Virgin Mary, suffered under Pontius Pilate, was crucified, died and was buried; he descended into hell; on the third day he rose again from the dead; he ascended into heaven, and is seated at the right hand of God the Father almighty; from there he will come to judge the living and the dead. I believe in the Holy Spirit, the holy catholic Church, the communion of saints, the forgiveness of sins, the resurrection of the body, and life everlasting. Amen. www..com
