Introduction  Childhood obesity is defined as having excess body fat  Obese children are well over the normal weight for the average age and height  Efforts have been made to reduce and advocate against childhood obesity

Statistics  In 2010, more than 1/3 of children and adolescents were overweight or obese  Childhood obesity has more than doubled in children and tripled in adolescents in the past 30 years  The percentage of adolescents who were obese increased from 5% in 1980 to 18% in 2010

Risk Factors  Unhealthy Diet  Lack of Exercise  Family History  Psychological Factors  Socioeconomic Factors

Health Effects  High Cholesterol  High Blood Pressure  Type 2 Diabetes  Metabolic Syndromes  Sleep Disorders  Breathing Complications  Early Puberty

Emotional Complications  Depression  Low Self-Esteem  Bullying  Behavior/Learning Problems

Treatment  Healthy Eating  Adequate Amount of Physical Activity  Weight Loss Medications  Surgery

Healthy Eating  Families should buy large quantities of produce items  Limit intake of sweetened beverages  Sit down together for family meals  Limit the number of times eating at a restaurant

Physical Activity  Vary the different types of activities  Limit usage of electronics  Make it fun!

Impact on the World  Childhood obesity impacts our future generations greatly  If efforts are not taken to stop the “spread” of this disease, the health of future generations will be at risk  As of 2013, over 155 million children all over the world are either overweight or obese, and these figures continue to rise

Advocacy  Organizations such as “Let’s Move” and “Fuel Up to Play 60” empower parents to provide their children with healthy foods and access to facilities in order to provide adequate physical activity  “Let’s Move” campaign founded by first lady Michelle Obama  “Fuel Up To Play 60” sponsored by the NFL

Conclusion  Childhood obesity is a disease which will continue to spread if efforts are not taken in order to guide children on the right path  Campaigns have started to advocate a healthy lifestyle and pose as role models for younger generations
