WHAT IS PAP? THE PRE-ADVANCED PLACEMENT (AP) COURSES ARE DESIGNED TO CHALLENGE STUDENTS WITH RIGOROUS COURSE WORK IN ORDER TO PREPARE THEM TO TAKE ADVANCED PLACEMENT COURSES IN HIGH SCHOOL. CURRICULUM & LEARNING DEPARTMENT

Pre-AP IS…Pre-AP IS NOT… for all students.limited to a certain student group. structured to introduce, scaffold, and reinforce skills.expecting students to arrive with all skills at a proficient level. preparation for all students to choose increasingly rigorous courses. a track. to equip students for college and career readiness with 21 st century skills expecting students to already be prepared for college and career success. for intentional development of critical thinking skills and habits of mind necessary for success in AP courses. a course that discriminately makes content, products, and processes more complex and/or inaccessible to any student group. a course that requires teachers to differentiate by adding depth and complexity to content area according to the student’s readiness interest and learning profile. a course that automatically meets students’ needs because of its title. differentiated according to students’ needs.Just faster, more work, or tied to a different book.

7TH GRADE PAP MATH STUDENT REQUIREMENTS: CURRENTLY IN 6TH PAP, DISTRICT PLACEMENT TEST, STAAR DATA, TEACHER INPUT FOR WORK ETHIC, STUDY SKILLS, SPEED IN NEW CONCEPT, CRITICAL THINKING AND PROBLEM SOLVING STUDENTS WILL BE TAUGHT 60% OF 7TH AND 100% 8TH GRADE TEKS STUDENTS WILL TAKE THE 8TH STAAR TEST IN MARCH…THE TEKS OF PROBABILITY IS NOT TESTED ON THAT TEST SO IT WILL BE TAUGHT AFTER THAT MARCH TEST DATE IF YOUR CHILD DOES NOT PASS THE 8TH GRADE MATH STAAR IN 7TH, THEY WILL RETAKE 8TH GRADE MATH IN 8TH GRADE. GOAL IN TAKING PAP MATH IS SO THAT YOU CAN TAKE HIGHER LEVEL AP COURSES YOUR SENIOR YEAR. ITS NOT IMPOSSIBLE TO DOUBLE UP YOUR JUNIOR AND SENIOR YEAR IF YOUR CHILD DEVELOPMENTAL STAGE FOR MATH IS LATER.

7TH GRADE ELECTIVES: BAND GIRLS CHOIR BOYS CHOIR THEATRE LIFE TIME NUTRITION AND WELLNESS/TECHNOLOGY EDUCATION SPANISH FOR NATIVE SPEAKERS (SPANISH 3) *STUDENTS WHO FAIL ANY PART OF THE STAAR TEST OR MEASURE “HIGH RISK” ON SCREENERS MAY LOSE THEIR ELECTIVE CHOICE AND BE PLACED IN AN ACCELERATED READING OR MATH CLASS.

ADVANCEMENT VIA INDIVIDUAL DETERMINATION THIS COURSE MEETS DURING ADVISORY & CLUB SKILLS AVID TEACHES: STUDY SKILL, ORGANIZATION, NOTE TAKING, AND CRITICAL THINKING SKILLS OUTSIDE TUTORS COME IN ONCE A WEEK TO AN IN CLASS TUTORING SESSION STUDENTS MUST TAKE AT LEAST ONE PAP-CLASS STUDENTS SHOULD HAVE PASSED READING AND MATH STAAR THE PREVIOUS YEAR GOAL IS TO PUSH B/C STUDENTS OR A/B STUDENTS TO ACHIEVE MORE LOOKING FOR STUDENTS WHO WILL CONTINUE THE PROGRAM THROUGHOUT H.S GRADE AVID FOCUS IS ON COLLEGE SCHOLARSHIPS AND APPLICATIONS.
