Sorry Strivers, Talent Matters(?)

Jeff Tilton via msu.edu via 11/20/11 to hambric3, emeinz Your article, Sorry, Strivers :Talent Matters, from the title to the last paragraph, felt as if that annoying precocious brat that always has that, "I told you so," attitude wrote it. The writing gives the impression that both the authors place themselves in the latter group and disdain the former. Stick to journal writing because you suck at this.

What does Gladwell say? I am a story-teller, and I look to academic research … for ways of augmenting story-telling. The reason I don’t do things their way is because their way has a cost: it makes their writing inaccessible. If you are someone who has as their goal... to reach a lay audience... you can't do it their way. - Malcolm Gladwell

The Land of Opportunity

The Rags-to-Riches Myth I hope by now that you are skeptical of this kind of story. Brilliant immigrant kid overcomes poverty and the Depression, can’t get a job at the stuff downtown law firms, makes it on his own through sheer hustle and ability. It’s a rags-to-riches story and everything we’ve learned…suggests that success doesn’t happen that way.

The Bottom-Line Success is not a random act. It arises out of a predictable and powerful set of circumstances and opportunities, and at this point…it shouldn’t be hard to figure out where the perfect lawyer comes from (p. 155).
